Hometown/high school:
East Hartford, Connecticut/Sports & Medical Sciences Academy

Dajeé  Addison is from East Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from the Sports & Medical Sciences Academy.  She was heavily involved in community service, specifically in United for Change, held several internships, and participated in Aetna HPPI Academy (Junior and Senior Doctors Academy).  Her nominator states, “Dajeé is a leader in that she leads by example. She exemplifies the importance of academics in a quiet, dignified manner.” With this said, Dajeé is considered an excellent role model for peers. Dajeé is more than motivated to attain a college degree seeing how a lack of a college education has affected her mother.  At Northeastern, Dajeé is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering along with a minor in Art+Design. She currently volunteers her time to The Center of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education, which promotes the STEM subjects to elementary students in low-performing Boston Public Schools.

Mauro Di Pinto hails from Sarasota, Florida where he graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School.  After his father's death, he and his mom immigrated from southern Italy to find a better life. He played a big role in his community and has donated countless hours of his time to many local senior living centers. His Torch nominator writes, "Mauro has strong moral fiber and character. He has a clear vision of what he wants, and a huge commitment to achieve that vision." He says "I am motivated to succeed and do well no matter what or how difficult the circumstance. Torch has given me the opportunity to aspire to change my life and to understand the idea of giving back to the community." Mauro has been a tutor with Math Powers thru CEP, and he is currently an Italian instructor with NUCALLS, offering free classes to collegiate students. During his Summer II Dialogue of Civilization in Salerno, Italy, he volunteered as a TA. Mauro is also a Zumba certified Instructor, and he plans on leading classes in the NU recreation center for spring 2013. Mauro is majoring in Biology.

Jean-Michel Estime is originally from Haiti.  He immigrated to the US and was dedicated to learning the English language. His teachers have stated that they have never seen anyone so devoted to learning.  He was involved with the Dream Writers Club (students learning how to master the English language) and is passionate about assisting others to overcome obstacles similar to those he has faced. Additionally, he was involved in the Youth Police Program.  His nominator wrote, “Jean-Michel is the type of student who does not feel successful unless he has helped others achieve success.”  Jean- Michel is pursuing a major in International Affairs.

Terina Keller is from Portland, Oregon, and graduated from Madison High School. She was involved in volunteer opportunities, Mad Mouths Club, and varsity cheerleading.  Terina also attended several summer college enrichment programs, including one at Johns Hopkins University where that opportunity led her to meet child refugees who inspired her to help those less fortunate. Terina’s nominator states, “Her matter-of-fact open-mindedness is exemplified in her interest in new people, places, and perspectives, and her consistent commitment to community service.” It is no wonder she is majoring in Sociology with a minor in Health Science.

Brenda Marte was raised in the Bronx, New York and graduated from Manhattan Center for Science and Math.   She participated in community service, academic enrichment programs, and was a film and writing student. She was privileged to film a public access television show which aired bimonthly. Brenda was specifically involved with the East Harlem Tutorial which has given her different opportunities to lead and be creative. She enjoyed being an instructor for the younger children in their after school program.  Her nominator states, “Brenda is a positive influence on others with her energy and ebullient personality. She is a supportive presence in a group, and does not back down from her share of the work or responsibility.” Brenda is currently pursuing her degree in business management.

Moyobamba, Peru

Adriana Mesia is originally from Moyobamba, Peru.  In 2006, Adriana and her family immigrated to the United States knowing very little English.  During that summer, she read for a ninety-year old woman in English, and from that day forward she was empowered to succeed as well as tackle the English language.  She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy and was heavily involved in extracurricular activities, including National Honor Society, yearbook, and community service, particularly assisting the elderly in a nursing home. Her nominator states, “Although very reserved, Adriana is steadfast and reliable, and gently assists others whenever there is a need.” At Northeastern, Adriana is pursuing her degree in business management

Boston, Massachusetts/Lynn English High School

Octave Ntambi lived in Uganda until his middle school years when he immigrated to the US. At Lynn English High School in Massachusetts, Octave was an active member of the National Honor Society and achieved a near perfect academic record taking honors and AP classes. He was involved in volunteer activities such as feeding the homeless and visiting residents at various health facilities. In 2010, Octave led a project to collect goods for the Haitian earthquake survivors, and in turn, his actions have motivated others to join his community service activities. His nominator states, “He is proud enough to be resilient, humble enough to take criticism and learn from his mistakes, genuine enough to inspire others [and], persistent enough to overcome enormous financial obstacles.” Now, Octave is studiously pursuing his degree in nursing. He embodies the values of honesty, hard work and shared success.

Roslindale, Massachusetts/Dorchester Academy

Diane Ortiz was born in Roslindale, Massachusetts and graduated from Dorchester Academy receiving high honors throughout her high school career. She promoted school spirit as a cheerleader and served as a mentor for youth. In the summers, she interned at Boston City Hall. Her Torch nominator describes Diane as “a reliable friend to those who are close to her.  She works well with groups and is helpful to students in class who may be struggling with a new idea or concept.” Diane took college courses at Bunker Hill Community College anticipating her academic interests, and is now majoring in business marketing at Northeastern.

Harlem, New York/Simsbury High School

Tylik Stevens was raised in Harlem, New York, and graduated from Simsbury High School as A Better Chance Scholar.  He was an active sportsman playing for Simsbury’s basketball team and provided coaching support and leadership to students with special needs through Unified Sports.  On top of this, Tylik has been consistently on the honor roll. His Torch nominator wrote, “It is never about the letter grade for him.  He truly desires to learn and understand things on a much deeper level and encourages others to do the same.” Tylik says that, “My fight is to be successful not only as a student but as a person. Education has been my sword.” Currently at Northeastern, Tylik is a Husky Ambassador and works on campus as well. Now, Tylik is majoring in communications.
