Torch Scholars Reconnect!
On September 15, 2012, about 30 Torch scholars and alums went to Thompson Island on the Boston Harbor Islands for a weekend retreat. The Torch Scholars worked with instructors from the Outward Bound program and participated in low and high ropes courses, teambuilding activities, and one awesome game of ultimate football! The Torch Reconnection Retreat was an initiative that was proposed by members of Torch class 6, Class of 2016. The members of Torch class 6 planned and organized this reconnection retreat because they believed it was important to build a stronger cohort between current scholars and recent alums. Now in our seventh year, The Torch Scholars program was fortunate and proud to graduate our premier class, Torch 1, in May 2011 and recently graduated our second class, Torch 2 in May 2012. We had several local alums of the Torch Scholars Program participate on the retreat to welcome the new Torch class, but also to engage in the community that supported them throughout their college career at Northeastern University.
The Outward Bound program challenged the scholars to step outside their comfort zones. The scholars participated in activities that pushed them to solve problems by working as a group, but also reinforced their bond as they were cheering and encouraging each other during the ropes course activities. The weekend was brought to a close as the scholars stood on the largest salt marsh on the Boston Harbor Islands and the Torch alums spoke candidly about their passion for the Torch experience. The alums and current scholars proceeded to celebrate “The Torch Experience” by marking each other with a muddy T on their foreheads. The T stood for Torch and the ceremony represented their united bond. The Torch scholars left the island with a renewed energy and ready to embark on the academic year. The first Torch Reconnection Retreat was a success!
