The Torch Scholars Program

Transforming High Potential into High Achievement

Continuing a century-old commitment to educational access, Northeastern University launched the Torch Scholars Program in 2006, a bold and innovative initiative awarded to individuals who have overcome exceptional odds and who demonstrate the potential to excel academically.

Torch is dedicated to closing the achievement gap for first-generation, low-income students from diverse backgrounds through a full scholarship and a comprehensive support program that improves the college retention rate, leadership opportunities, social capital, and academic achievement of our students.

Torch maintains a 91% retention rate, earned through a comprehensive advising system, social capital development, positive group identity, engagement on campus and in the community, and a curriculum geared towards the specific needs of first-generation college students. This holistic support ensures that students graduate and continue to be leaders in a global community.

Torch is much more than a scholarship; it is a sustainable and replicable Program, with the potential to inform the way that universities recruit and retain talented students. Making an investment in human potential, Torch works hard to find resilient students with high rates of achievement and leadership in non-traditional ways. Through a rigorous non-cognitive admissions process, Torch not only finds, but develops bright young people who often go unnoticed in hard-to-reach communities across America.

Through outreach projects totaling more than 5,000 hours each year, Torch scholars are creating legacy for the University and the Program while helping to promote a college-going culture in the community. Torch will increase the ability of talented first-generation college students to compete at high levels in the classroom and workplace, providing leadership opportunities and experiential learning for a new generation of first-generation college students.
