Dr. Matthew Bracken

Marine Ecology
Assistant Professor, Northeastern University
Matt Bracken has been teaching the Marine Ecology course since 2008, having joined Northeastern University’s Biology faculty after completing a Phd in the Menge/Lubchenco lab at Oregon State University, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Bodega Marine Lab/UC Davis.  He’s combined his research interests in intertidal ecology and nearshore/tidepool oceanography to create a unique course curriculum for his Marine Ecology course.

Dr. Donald Cheney

Marine Botany
Associate Professor, Northeastern University

Don Cheney’s ties to the Three Seas Program date back to its inception twenty-eight years ago. He has taught in several different courses, including Molecular Marine Botany, and Ocean and Coastal Processes. Don returns to the program this year to teach the Marine Botany course.

Dr. Sal Genovese

Marine Biology Careers Seminar
Three Seas Program Director

Sal Genovese has been teaching the Marine Biology Careers Seminar since the inception of the Marine Biology Professional Science Masters Program in 2005.  Over the past 15 years as Three Seas Program Director he has also taught or co-taught the Diving Research Methods, Experimental Design in Marine Biology, Ocean & Coastal Processes, and Coral Reef Ecology courses.

Dr. Robert Haney

Marine Invertebrate Zoology
Post-doctoral Research Associate, Northeastern University

Rob Haney joined us this fall as the instructor for the Marine Invertebrate Zoology course. When not teaching in the program, Rob is a postdoctoral research associate conducting NSF-funded research with MSC Director, Geoff Trussell, and MSC Associate Director, Steve Vollmer.

Catherine Matassa, M.S. 

Experimental Design in Marine Ecology
Catherine, a Three Seas alumnae (EWXXI), joined Geoff’s group as a PhD candidate after completing the internship portion of the inaugural Professional Science Masters program in 2006. Catherine was Geoff’s TA for 3 years and with Geoff’s appointment as Director of the MSC, she has now taught Geoff’s curriculum for Experimental Design for the last 4 years.  Catherine won a graduate student teaching award for teaching the Experimental Design course in 2010

Dr. Geoffrey Trussell

Associate Professor and MSC Director, Northeastern University
Geoff Trussell has been teaching Experimental Design in Marine Ecology since 1998. He developed this course for the Three Seas Program while still a doctoral student at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, conducting his field research here at Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center. He joined Northeastern University’s Biology Department as a faculty member in 2002, and became MSC Director in 2009.
