Parmet Leads Triumphant Legal Team

A legal team led by Professor Wendy Parmet has convinced the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts to rule in support of the plaintiffs on a key constitutional issue in a case brought on behalf of 40,000 legal immigrants denied access to Commonwealth Care.

"The Supreme Judicial Court’s opinion today marks an important reaffirmation that the constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts protects the rights of all legal residents," said Wendy Parmet, who argued the case before the SJC in November. Parmet is a faculty member at Northeastern University School of Law. "In ruling that the Legislature’s decision to deny legal immigrants access to Commonwealth Care must be subject to strict scrutiny, the Court reaffirmed that equal protection must be respected even in times of fiscal distress."

Parmet and the HLA team claimed that the 2009 law violates the equal protections provisions of the Massachusetts Constitution. “The state contends that the state constitution does not treat aliens as a protected class and that the 1996 federal welfare reform law authorizes the 2009 act," said Parmet. "The case was originally brought before a single justice of the SJC, and after many a procedural turn, including a trip to and from federal court, we ended up briefing and arguing four questions before the full SJC in November.”

SAVE-THE-DATE: Alumni/ae Weekend 2011
Join us October 21-22, 2011

All graduates are invited to join us for a faculty reception on Friday, October 21, 2011. This annual event always draws a terrific crowd of graduates and faculty in Dockser Hall’s Commons. Dean Emily Spieler will give the State of the Law School address prior to the faculty reception. Saturday events will include school updates, fun activities, and a memorable reunion class dinner and cocktail reception at the Colonnade Hotel’s elegant ballroom. Celebrating reunion years in 2011 are the following classes: ’51, ’56, ’71, ’76, ’81, ’86, ’91, ’96, ’01, and ’06. Surrounding class years are always welcome to attend.

Volunteers Wanted

Some of our reunion classes are still in need of volunteers to assist with marketing and fund-raising. If you would like to help with event planning and getting the word out to your classmates, please contact Mielle Marquis at m.marquis@neu.edu. If you're interested in assisting in fund-raising for your Reunion Class Gift, please contact James Poulos at j.poulos@neu.edu, or call 617.373.2015. We hope to recruit at least six volunteers for each reunion class. Get involved, help us build the excitement, and assist with bringing in financial support for your alma mater.

CALL for Artists for Alumni/ae Weekend

As part of Alumni/ae Weekend 2011, we are reaching out to graduates of all years to donate art works for a silent action to raise money for NUSL’s Annual Fund. If you are an artist who would be willing to donate a painting, photograph, sculpture, or piece of jewelry for the auction, please e-mail Mielle Marquis at m.marquis@neu.edu. The auction will take place as part of the Reunion Class Dinner on Saturday, October 22, 2011.
