The goal of the course is to teach the ideas of probabilistic reasoning, and the techniques of probabilistic calculation, thereby preparing students for the study of statistics. This is a non-calculus based course in introductory probability for computer science majors. It will mostly look at discrete probability spaces, but will also look at continuous spaces using either geometry or formulas. The course presents sample spaces, events, and axioms. It studies conditional probability and Bayes' Law, independence, random variables and their distributions, joint distributions, expected value, and variance. Topics also include the law of large numbers, the central limit theorem, and the use of probability in statistical inference. |
