Program Description: This program consists of two courses, one in Italian language and one in contemporary Italian culture. The courses are held in Salerno, on the beautiful Amalfi Coast in the South of Italy. A four-day trip to Rome will conclude this special experience of Italy.
Along with traditional lectures and the study of Italy’s institutional society and its history, the course requires students to develop an “emic” perspective on Italian culture by carrying out a mini ethnographic research. Students are introduced to the method before leaving and are responsible for reading guidelines and articles concerning ethnography. They reposition themselves as “participant observers”, communicating independently in Italian language, and discover aspects of the culture they are studying. Salerno, the Amalfi Coast, Naples and Rome will be the classroom for the study in this hands-on educational experience.
If you want to: learn Italian language in the most effective way with a culture immersion program and Italian faculty; study key issues in contemporary Italian culture, society and politics, including the media, immigration, regionalism and others; explore from a historical, anthropological and cultural point of view the unique, complex reality of Italian cities; discover the real Italy in locations away from major tourist sites; acquire an indispensable skill in a global world, facilitating your ability to communicate with others, and improving your potential for success in your chosen field.
