The jewel of Renaissance Italy, Florence, will be the primary setting for this interprofessional dialogue in global healthcare leadership and management. Through conversation with leaders and scholars in the intersecting fields of healthcare, law, and business, students will begin to consider issues such as maximizing positive synergies between international healthcare systems, healthcare informatics, creating a sustainable healthcare workforce for the new millennium, and strategic global health initiatives.
At the University of Bologna students will meet with faculty who teach and practice Mindful Leadership and Emotional Intelligence. Research findings will be discussed and applied to contemporary models of leadership as students reflect upon and discuss the qualities and characteristics of effective leaders. There will be ample opportunity to exchange ideas with these local scholars in order to build a deeper understanding of multiple aspects of the Italian healthcare system, the role of health care professions within the system, and the structure, function, and efficacy of both the private and public sectors. A cross-comparison with US healthcare practices will be explored in this setting and during the course.
Students will also visit clinics, acute and chronic pediatric and adult specialty hospitals, the Red Cross, and service-learning agencies within Tuscany. These excursions will afford multiple opportunities for dialogue and reflection about the significance of these health centers to the well-being of the people of the region.
In addition to the study of global leadership and management, students will explore the arts, language, and culture of the Tuscan region at the Lorenzo de Medici (LdM) School- The Italian International Institute. The LdM program in Florence is based on a full-immersion concept; students will live and study in a true Italian environment with other international students. The school’s partnership with University of Florence, business, and government facilitates community integration which is fundamental to the LdM educational philosophy. Students are encouraged to create relationships in a cultural context that is different than their own by living and learning with the people of Italy; as such, students experience a true international living experience. Cultural immersion courses integrate the histories of the Etruscan, Roman and medieval civilizations; courses in the culinary arts reflect a connection to the agricultural cycles and traditions of the region. A blend of these courses, as well as the study of Italian language, will be offered in an experiential learning model. LdM maintains strong connections with the community which affords many opportunities for involvement in community projects
Areas of cultural and social interest in Rome, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Assisi, the Etruscan village of San Gimignano will be included as weekend and day excursions. Students will also enjoy the natural beauty of volcanic sites, hiking trails, and beaches during this stay in the Chianti countryside of Tuscany.
