Description
Faculty Leader: Michelle Carr (mi.carr@neu.edu)
The emphasis of this Dialogue is the city of Rome. The purpose of the dialogue is to familiarize students with the people and the culture of Italy and the Roman Empire. During the program students will attend lectures that explore the issues of Realism and Modernism, as well as, documentary filmmaking. In addition to the lectures students will visit many of the key sights in Rome including tours of the Vatican and Vatican Museums, the Borghese Gallery, the ruins at Ostia Antica, the Colosseum/Forum, the modern EUR district, and the Capitoline Museum. Students will interact with local citizens to produce and edit an 8-10 minute documentary on various subject matters relating to Roman culture. During the dialogue, students will maintain a photo journal or blog documenting their experiences. They will also write extensive reaction papers on three topics associated with the lectures or places from our travels and their interactions with the locals. Experience in media production is not a requirement but they must have enthusiasm to explore another culture and to experience first hand how theory can provide a deeper, more complex understanding of culture, art, and politics.
