Description

Dialogue leader: Professor Anita Finkelman(a.finkelman@neu.edu)

Students will not only get an in depth view of the medical system and healthcare problems from Israeli experts but also an in depth experience in a multicultural society—discussing culture, language, religion, traditions, economics, history, and dietary and local foods, and more related to ethnic groups such as Jewish Israelis, Arab Israelis, Bedouins, Russians, and Ethiopians. More than 50% of the patients served are Arab Israelis or Bedouins. We will go to Bedouin settlements and cities to talk to people who live there and to interact with healthcare providers. Classroom experiences include a broad range—from medical topics, healthcare delivery, social services, communication, impact of military service, and impact of culture on the patients, healthcare outcomes, and on staff. Students will have a better understanding of how a small country has dealt with a large number of immigrants from all over the world. Extensive visits to specialty areas in the medical center, clinics, and home visits to Bedouin communities expand student learning. Taking Health Care Management along with the experience in Israel provides great opportunities for comparing two different modern health care systems and better understanding health care leadership and management issues.

Students will have several opportunities to interact with BGU students who represent many of the ethnic groups mentioned here and also other students on the campus and in health sciences as they will live on campus. BGU is known for its diverse student population. Students will have the experience of living in one city and finding out more about a country on a day-to-day basis. There are more than 25 different BGU faculty and medical center and external community healthcare staff lecturing and guiding discussions. This provides many opportunities for students to talk directly with people who live in Israel. Students will experience some Israeli holidays with on campus activities.
