ALICANTE: CIEE – Universidad de Alicante

With a population approaching 350,000, Alicante is a thriving Spanish city. Located on the Mediterranean coast, Alicante is an inviting place for students to begin their exploration of Spain or continue a previous journey. In recent times, Alicante has experienced a development boom and rapid population growth. Students will see modern architecture and Internet cafés alongside historic buildings, and shopping malls next to centuries-old open-air markets. Although fast becoming a cosmopolitan and multicultural city, Alicante retains a distinct Spanish flavor.

Students have multiple semester and summer study abroad options in Alicante.

CIEE offers two different semester program tracks for students to study abroad at the Universidad de Alicante in Alicante, Spain. The three program tracks that students can apply to include: Language and Culture, Language in Context, and Liberal Arts. Students will take courses with other study abroad students from all over the nation, as well as local students, in these courses.

Students can choose  the following summer track: Summer Language and Culture. Students must enroll in both the summer I and summer II tracks in order to receive 8 NU credits. These two, four-week sessions are designed for students looking to improve their language skills and take content courses in Spanish or English. A wide selection of challenging courses, homestays, and a variety of cultural activities and excursions provide you with a unique academic and intercultural experience abroad.

 


AMSTERDAM: Vrije Universiteit

AUCKLAND: University of Auckland

This program, on the north island of New Zealand, allows students to live and study in a cosmopolitan city with picturesque harbors, mountains, lakes, parks, and beaches just a short distance from the university. Students spend either the summer/fall or the spring/summer terms at the University of Auckland. The courses are offered mostly in the Arts & Sciences, but there are a variety of disciplines from which to choose. Students will also have access to all campus resources, including e-mail, campus activities, library facilities, and sports clubs.


BEIJING: IES

As the political, intellectual, and cultural capital of China, Beijing is a dynamic city reinventing itself for the 21st century.  Beijingers remain proud of their traditions, their language, and a rich heritage that dates back centuries, making it the perfect place to study Chinese while learning about China's past, present, and future.  Spend as much time as you can indulging in this city's rich culture: explore the maze of hutong, shop the glitzy areas of Chaoyang, and wander through the majestic Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.

Students have the option to study for a semester abroad in Beijing by participating in one of the following IES Programs:

Language Intensive Program
With small classes, a high-quality language curriculum, and daily tutorials, this program option offers students who have already begun Chinese language studies the opportunity to rapidly expand their knowledge of spoken and written Mandarin Chinese. Students round out their schedule with a selection of area studies courses taught in English, in addition to travel to remote locations in China and the option of a for-credit internship.

Contemporary Issues in China Program
For students who wish to explore China in-depth, but do not have previous Chinese language experience, the Contemporary Issues in China Program features a series of advanced-level courses on the history, economics, and culture of China. Each course incorporates extensive field trips and travel directly into the curriculum. This new program is an ideal choice for students with little previous exposure to China.


BEIJING: Tsinghua University

Tsinghua University is one of the leading universities directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China. It is among the list of the Key Universities in both the National Projects 985 and 211, and also the prominent center for higher education and scientific research. The university holds the largest numbers of academicians affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, of the top disciplines on the whole, of the Key National Laboratories, of national awards in science and technology, of research funds, and also of articles indexed in SCI, EI and ISTP over the years. More than 70% of the top 10 students of sciences and 30% of the top 10 students of liberal arts from the provinces in the National College Entrance Examination in China have chosen Tsinghua University for their undergraduate study.


BELFAST: Queen’s University Belfast

BUDAPEST: Aquincum Institute of Technology

Fostering student creativity has been a hallmark of mathematics and science education in Hungary for over a century; John von Neumann, to whom we owe the principles of stored-program digital computers, Andy Grove, longtime leader of Intel, and Charles Simonyi, father of Microsoft Office, all got their start in the schools of Budapest. American students now have the opportunity to experience this tradition through a study-abroad program offered by the Aquincum Institute of Technology (AIT), Budapest. AIT offers a unique English language study abroad experience for U.S. computer science and computer engineering majors. The program is built on four pillars:

An array of theoretical and practical computer science and engineering courses taught by international leaders in these fields
Novel courses on design and entrepreneurship in a global environment taught by European pioneers such as Dr. Ern

BUENOS AIRES: CAPA – Universidad Austral

The CAPA Buenos Aires Program provides students the opportunity to study Spanish while taking courses in art history, economics, history, international relations, literature, politics, and sociology, all of which are taught in English. The four-month semester program and six-week summer program are open to students of all language abilities. Students will  have access to a variety of student events, and the CAPA staff will be available 24/7 along the way. This program is ideal for those who want to experience the culture of Buenos Aires firsthand.


CANBERRA: Australian National University

Study Abroad Coordinator: Katherine Pruess (k.pruess@neu.edu) The Australian National Internships Program (ANIP) is a very competitive and challenging program organized by the Graduate School of Public Administration for Australian graduate and undergraduate students. Recently, however, ANU has opened the program to qualified international students. ANIP combines courses taken at the Australian National University with an internship at the Australian Parliament, Public Service Organizations (i.e. Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australian Sports Commission), or Non-Governmental Organizations (i.e. Greening Australia, Australian Youth Policy). You do not need to be a political science student to take advantage of this program. ANIP has placed students who major in chemistry, art, economics, and music.


CAPE TOWN: CIEE – University of Cape Town

Arts & Sciences Program
This program is appropriate for students from all academic disciplines who have a strong interest in learning about contemporary South African life and society and the forces that have created that society.

Program participants are required to enroll in at least one course with specific African content or one that offers a distinctive African perspective in their area of interest. Alternatively, students can enroll in the independent study option. Courses may be taken in all University of Cape Town faculties excluding Health Sciences. A full course load is considered 3-4 courses. A typical combination of courses includes two courses at the 200 level, and one or two courses at the 300 level.

Service-Learning Program
This program is appropriate for students from all academic disciplines who have experience with community service and/or volunteerism and who are highly motivated to engage in community service while taking part in a rigorous academic program of language study, social research methodology, African studies, and independent research.

All students enroll in the core course, which includes a service placement, choose to study either Xhosa or Afrikaans language, and complete their studies with a capstone project.


CARDIFF: Cardiff University

The program is geared toward students interested in continuing French language study and learning Wolof, while taking other courses in English and having a cultural immersion experience.


DUBLIN: CIEE – Dublin City University

The CIEE program at Dublin City University in Dublin is appropriate for students from a variety of disciplines who are well prepared academically for direct matriculation. The program is ideal for students wishing to take courses in international relations and communications and who wish to participate in the rich campus life of a small tight-knit university. The CIEE Study Center in Dublin is designed for students who are interested in taking courses in their major while also studying about and living in Ireland, and includes an internship option. The program at Dublin City University opened in fall 2005. DCU is an exciting, modern campus, buzzing with life. With over 100 clubs and societies, a very active student union, a student social events calendar overflowing with activities, and a student social center located in the heart of campus, DCU is a great place to study abroad. It is located close to the Dublin city center which is steeped in history and is renowned for its rich social and cultural life.


DUBLIN: Institute of Public Administration (IPA)

Students spend a semester at the Institute of Public Administration (IPA) in Dublin. Students take three courses at the Institute while also interning in the Irish Parliament (the Dail). The internship provides an insiders perspective of the parliamentary system of government that would not be possible in the US. The program may include a weeklong field trip to the European continent to visit the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, and Paris, France. Students also visit Belfast. Trips may or may not be offered every semester.


DUBLIN: International New Venture (I-NV)

The New Venture Lab course is designed to experience first-hand some of the challenges that entrepreneurs are confronted with while searching for entrepreneurial opportunities or solving problems related to critical issues in today’s operating environment. The New Venture Lab course is the follow-up experiential complement to any entrepreneurship-related course that focuses on a specific area. Students are required to work in teams to work on problems of strategic importance to an assigned venture.  The startup firms in which students will work are located both in the incubator at Dublin City University (DCU) and at the old Guinness Brewery, which has been converted into an incubator for high tech companies.  Projects vary widely, but typically involve investigating potential markets for a new technology/product/service, evaluating the competitive and strategic landscape, finding the right path to successful opportunity exploitation.  New Venture Lab is a hands-on course, so be prepared to spend a lot of time with customers and experts in-person, by email, and over the phone.


EDINBURGH: University of Edinburgh

FLORENCE: Studio Art Centers International (SACI)

Studio Arts Center International (SACI) was founded by an American artists to offer study abroad students the opportunity to live and study in Florence, Italy, surrounded by the treasures of Medieval, Renaissance, and contemporary Europe. SACI is an active member of the Florentine community, exhibiting current artists and helping to conserve and restore precious paintings and buildings. Courses are taught in English and focus on art and architecture. Most art courses are available in beginning through advanced levels. There is also a selection of Italian language and culture classes, which students are encouraged to take. Some classes include field trips around Florence and Italy.


GOLD COAST: Bond University

Bond University, located on the Gold Coast of Australia (one hour from Brisbane), offers students an opportunity to live and study with other Australian and international students at the first private university in Australia. Bond has a student population of only 2,600 and a student/faculty ratio of only 10:1. This allows students to receive personal attention from its faculty and interact closely with the entire college community.

Students are encouraged to partake in the multitude of activities both on and off-campus. Bond offers students courses in many Arts & Sciences disciplines. The Semester at Bond is purposely scheduled to be compatible with the academic calendar of "American, European, and Asian" universities.

This program, through the International Asian Study Programs (IASP) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), offers students an opportunity to live and study in this exciting, fast paced city while it defines its new role in modern China. Students are able to select courses, taught in English, from both the IASP curriculum and the regular course offerings of the Chinese University. Students fluent in Mandarin and/or Cantonese language may choose to take courses exclusively taught in these dialects. Classroom discussions, field trips, and every day Chinese life also enable students to immerse themselves in the culture and see, first-hand, the dramatic changes that are taking place each day.

HYDERABAD: CIEE

Students have the opportunity to explore India's cultural and religious diversity while experiencing the impact of modernity upon tradition. This program is also ideal for a student who would like to do a service project, participate in volunteer work or undertake an internship.


Ireland, England, and Switzerland: Drug Discovery and Development

The contemporary chemical industry owes its origins to pioneering research and development conducted in 18th century in Europe. Through the 19th and 20th century, chemistry was an enabling force in the development of commodity products spanning fabric dyes, paints, petrochemical products, plastics, explosives, narcotics, agrochemicals, and ultimately pharmaceuticals. From its origins in Germany and Switzerland, the industry has grown substantively to become a global industry with major activity in North America and Europe, with emerging activity in Asia, South America and Russia. This dialogue will give students a global perspective on the science underpinning contemporary drug discovery. As classic small molecule pharmaceuticals and being supplanted by next generation biopharmaceuticals, students will learn of the strategies corporations engage in to develop new product pipelines and the innovation engine which spawned the development of the biopharmaceutical industry. The dialogue will involve academic instruction in the chemistry of drug design, development and production coupled with exposure to industrial processes through a series of site visits in three countries. The dialogue will be initially based in Dublin, Ireland in the grounds of University College Dublin. The campus is adjacent to the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training [NIBRT], who will provide an overview of the steps involved in the manufacture of biopharmaceuticals. We will also visit a number of biotechnology corporations who have facilities in Ireland in the Cork / Waterford area. Participants will then travel to the UK and visit research and manufacturing sites in the Liverpool area. Finally the dialogue will travel to Basel, Switzerland where interactions with a number of multinational pharmaceutical corporations will be facilitated. Throughout the dialogue, students will engage on a directed study project related to the biopharmaceutical industry. A series of cultural experiences will be arranged in Ireland, the UK and Switzerland, including meetings with research students at regional Universities. The dialogue will feature three Northeastern University faculty who have professional and cultural ties to the countries visited (Professor Graham Jones-UK, Professor George O’Doherty-Ireland and Professor Roman Manetsch-Switzerland). ISTANBUL: CIEE

KHON KAEN: CIEE

This program offers students an opportunity to live and study in the heart of Europe for an academic Semester. Students will take three academic courses and participate in a research internship, which earns course credit. During the internship each student will work with the office of a European Parliament Member on a project designed to provide the Member with specific information about a subject on the Parliament's agenda.


LIMA: CIEE – Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú

Liberal Arts
The CIEE Liberal Arts program in Lima is designed for students with five or more semesters of college-level Spanish and a wide variety of majors. Participants directly enroll in regular university courses in a wide variety of subjects alongside Peruvian students and learn first-hand about contemporary culture in bustling Lima.

All students take the required 4-week intensive Spanish pre-session course. During the regular semester, students enroll in an additional Spanish language course, the CIEE core course, and two or three direct enrollment courses.

LONDON: Hansard Scholars Program

The Hansard Scholars Program combines political science course work with a for-credit internship at the House of Commons, House of Lords, or a public policy research institute. The internship includes a variety of administrative and research tasks. Students work at least three days a week assisting in the daily operations of the office and conducting research in conjunction with a term paper. The internship allows students to observe the inner workings of Parliament and immerse themselves in British politics. The program also includes several academic field trips. Previously students have traveled to Cardiff, Wales, and to Cambridge and Bath in England.

LONDON: School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

SOAS is unique; it is the only university in the UK to focus on the languages, cultures and societies of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. As one of the colleges within the University of London, it is consistently ranked among the top institutions in the UK and is recognised worldwide. Study Abroad students have the opportunity to fully integrate into this specialised institution and concentrate on regions and issues which they might not have had the opportunity to focus on before, for example: Human Rights, HIV/ Aids and Development, the Politics and Economics of the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia or the religions and cultures of these important regions. Study Abroad students are supported by a small but dedicated team before they arrive, during their studies and after they have left London. Regular pre-departure information is sent to all applicants and there are special orientation sessions at the start of each term as well as social events throughout the year. All students on the programme are appointed an academic advisor on arrival and can contact the Study Abroad team with any queries at all, whether they are about accommodation, course choices, transport and travel or where to find the nearest supermarket!

Students enroll directly into SOAS and can choose to study abroad in 3 study periods: Full academic year (Terms 1, 2 and 3), Term 1 only (fall), or Terms 2&3 only (spring)


MADRID: API – Universidad Nebrija

MADRID: CIEE – Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

Madrid, the capital of Spain, is located in the geographic center of the Iberian Peninsula. Points of interest include the historic center dating back to the Hapsburg Empire and world-renowned art museums, including the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen-Bornemisza. In addition to being a rich cultural heritage site, Madrid is a lively, artistic metropolis that can be experienced through its variety of food, tapas bars, dance shows, operas, music concerts, outdoor parks, jazz clubs, soccer matches, ethnic neighborhoods, and contemporary theater and cinema. Madrid’s influences in politics, education, science, entertainment, media, fashion, and the arts all contribute to its importance as an international metropolis. Madrid’s economic output, high living standards, and market size, ranks it as the major center of Southern Europe as well as the Iberian Peninsula, and the head offices of the vast majority of the major Spanish companies can be found in and around the city.

Students have multiple options in Madrid. Students may enroll for a semester program, and may choose from the following semester tracks: Business, Economics and Culture, Engineering and Society, Legal Studies , or Liberal Arts.

The Business, Economics and Culture track is designed to combine Spanish language and European and Iberian studies with coursework in business, economics and culture and the opportunity to participate in an internship in Madrid. Students will take a Spanish language course, European or Spain-related course, and direct enrollment courses in the all-English or Spanish Bachelor degrees in their respective academic field with an optional CIEE internship. Business and economics program students will take direct enrollment classes in business administration, economics, marketing,finance and accounting in either English or Spanish from Carlos III. CIEE participant also have the option to take an elective course from another UC3M department depending on the class pre-requisites and student´s language level. Students must have completed at least one Spanish course here at NU.

Whether your interest is in biomedical engineering, mechanical or audiovisual systems engineering, study abroad in Spain through the Engineering and Society track affords you the opportunity to experience one of the most vibrant cities in Europe, while continuing to pursue your degree. CIEE study abroad in Spain offers highly motivated students the opportunity to develop their Spanish language skills while pursuing a co-curricular program focused on their field of expertise. This is achieved through a Spanish language course, an elective with a Spanish or European focus, an optional internship, and a series of direct enrollment elective courses at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M). Study abroad in Madrid and you will: Study at the Universidad Carlos III, one of Spain’s top-ranking schools for telematics engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, telecommunications technologies engineering, and telecommunication systems engineering (it's ranked fourth in computer engineering), gain practical work experience and collaboration skills through a for-credit business or engineering-related internships, and take advantage of company visits in and around Madrid to find out how today’s scientists apply problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Students interested in studying law in Madrid will benefit from the Legal Studies track through CIEE. The CIEE Legal Studies program is designed for advanced Spanish language students who are highly motivated to improve their Spanish language skills through coursework focused on law, mediation, and human rights, while also participating in a Legal Studies internship in Madrid.

The Liberal Arts program allows independent, advanced level students the opportunity to matriculate in a combination of content courses in Hispanic studies (Estudios Hispánicos) and regular University courses in social sciences, humanities, journalism, pre-law, and engineering. Students also participate in seminars with Spanish students while they continue to improve their language skills and take advantage of the vibrant and rich cultural milieu of Madrid.

This intensive laboratory science program offers students the opportunity to live, study, and conduct research in an ecologically diverse environment with a community of professional scientists. After an orientation in San Jose, students embark on an academic field trip exploring Costa Rica's different ecosystems, ranging from dry tropical forests to lowland rain forests. Upon returning, students are immersed in an intensive study period at the Biology Station of Monteverde. Toward the end of the program, students live with a local Costa Rican family and conduct individual research projects. Before final exams, students participate on another program-sponsored field trip.

At the core of an Oxford education is the tutorial system, where students meet one-on-one or in small groups with a subject tutor who will provide constructive guidance and feedback on your intellectual journey. In most cases, Oxford students focus on one particular subject (like biochemistry or modern history) without general or elective study in subjects outside their specialty. Students meet with tutors and attend lectures for eight weeks a term during three, ten-week terms a year. During the long breaks between teaching terms, students consolidate and extend their reading and work in a subject. You and your principal tutor will decide on your major and minor tutorial concentrations for that term. For instance, a student in English may be directed to focus on Shakespeare's tragedies and 19th-century women's writing. Additionally, your principal tutor will appoint some of his or her colleagues to supervise your tutorials in each area. You will meet these tutors on a weekly or bi-weekly basis over the term. You can expect your principal tutor to assign readings, lectures, practical laboratory work, and a topic for you to prepare and present, often in the form of a tutorial essay. These essays, based on extensive independent reading, are concentrated expressions of your analysis of each weekly topic. You can expect to prepare one or two essays per week, which your tutor will critique and help you develop. Each term awards a total of 12 semester hours of credit, apportioned from three to eight credits for each tutorial depending on the number of meetings and proportion of time the tutorial requires.

Students will live and study at Charles University, located in the Old Town, the heart of the city. Founded in 1348, Charles University is the oldest University of Central Europe. This program focuses on North American political and social issues, including an understanding of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Students with Spanish language proficiency may choose classes from UDLA's regular course offerings. SALAMANCA: API – University of Salamanca

Salamanca is considered one of the most spectacular Renaissance cities in Europe. It is located in central Spain, amidst a landscape strewn with battlefields and castles, in an area where the kingdoms of Castilla and Aragón first unified Spain. From these roots, “Castellano,” or “Spanish,” became dominant throughout Spain. Salamanca’s Plaza Mayor is said to be the most beautiful plaza in Spain. Throughout the centuries, the sandstone buildings have gained an exquisite golden glow that has given Salamanca the nickname “la Ciudad Dorada” – the Golden City. The breathtaking Catedral Vieja and Catedral Nueva rise above the city, overlooking the river Tormes and the Roman Bridge. The Casa de las Conchas is a stunning edifice of shells carved into golden sandstone. One experiences the history of this magical city when roaming the streets and walking through the archways of the old quarter. The university, the winding streets, the inviting architecture, and the warm people welcome newcomers to this enchanting city.

Teaching Opportunities

All students with 3-4 semesters or more of college-level spanish (equivalent to the intermediate or B1 level) are able to participate in a teaching internship program. Students spend 5 hours per week for 8 weeks observing local primary school classes, and assist the teacher with classroom tasks as needed. No credit will be awarded.

There is an additional fee of 50 Euros to participate in this option. Students will receive an official certificate from the University of Salamanca detailing the hours and nature of their participation upon completion of the program.

Volunteer Placements

All students with 2 semesters of college-level Spanish (equivalent to the intermediate level) or more are able to participate in a volunteer teaching program. Students assist professors one hour per week, teaching English to Spaniards (ages 18 and up). Students will be able to apply for these opportunities on site, and placements are limited. This is a unique experience for API students in Salamanca to get to know Spaniards and Spanish life.

 


SALVADOR DA BAHIA: CIEE – multiple universities

SAN JOSE: International Center for Development Studies (ICDS)

Located in Costa Rica, ICDS is an applied research center which is dedicated to promoting sustainable human development. ICDS, jointly with ULatina, offers fall and spring semester programs* which include classes from an array of disciplines and topic areas related to sustainable human development, such as human rights, society and development, the environment, sustainable development, social justice and, of course, Spanish language. ICDS´ summer programs include courses relating to Spanish language and development, as well as Spanish language and the health care system in Latin America, the latter offered jointly with Hospital Clínica Bíblica, Costa Rica´s largest private hospital that is accredited by the Joint Commission International.

Equally important to class time, ICDS provides varied experiential and service-learning opportunities as a complement to its academic programs. Students in ICDS´ semester programs will take a service-learning course and participate in community work every week, complemented with reflection spaces in the classroom. Also, during the semester programs, there is an exciting field trip to Nicaragua to give students an opportunity to compare and contrast sustainable human development efforts in the two countries of the Central American region, partake in community work, and experience the local culture of Nicaragua. In addition to being immersed into Central American culture through service-learning and field trips, all students live with host families, and local Costa Rican students will also be part of the programs, providing even more contact and immersion into Costa Rican culture.

SANTIAGO: CIEE – Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra

Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, is surrounded by mountains. Places of historical, cultural, and ecological interest are nearby and easy to get to, and it is just a little over an hour's drive to the Atlantic Coast. Known as La Ciudad Corazon (City of the Heart), Santiago is the commercial and cultural center of the fertile Cibao Valley region. Although it is a growing city with a population exceeding 700,000, Santiago retains many features of a small town, and Santiaguero hospitality is known far and wide.


SANTO DOMINGO: CIEE – multiple universities

Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, is located on the southern coast of the island. It has a population of two million and is considered to be the main economic and political center of the country. The city, often called the "First City of the New World," is steeped in historical significance. There are numerous plazas and churches throughout the colonial district, which give a distinct flavor to the city. The city is divided by a river, the Rio Ozama, and is close to many beaches.

The CIEE Study Center, established in 1998, gives students the opportunity to enroll in classes at El Bono and INTEC. In addition, FLACSO offers several special courses for CIEE students, focused upon cultural, literary, artistic, political, and social aspects of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean as a whole. This arrangement permits students to combine the specialized, more personalized "think tank" atmosphere of FLACSO with courses offered through INTEC and El Bono.

The program is suitable for advanced undergraduate students with strong language skills and a background in the social sciences or Latin American studies.

Capital of Andalusia, Seville was one of the last footholds of the Moorish empire that ruled the Iberian Peninsula. It is home to the ingenious Barber of Seville and the tempestuous Carmen. The great Renaissance painters Velázquez and Murillo were born here, and Ferdinand and Isabel ruled Spain from the royal apartments in the Alcazar Palace. Though the city preserves its past, modern Seville is the commercial hub of Andalusia. For a city of fewer than 800,000, Seville offers amazing cultural activities, from flamenco to classical, pop, and jazz concerts.

Students have multiple options in Seville. Students may enroll for a semester or summer program.

Students can choose from the following semester tracks: Advanced Liberal Arts; Communication, New Media, and Journalism; International Business and Culture; Language and Society; and Liberal Arts. Some tracks offer classes in English and Spanish while other tracks have Spanish-only instruction.

Students can choose  the following summer track: Summer Language and Culture The Language and Culture summer study abroad program focuses on two interwoven areas—Spanish language and Spanish culture and history. THREE CITIES: Lorenzo de’ Medici

Our civilization is the end product of widely contrasting cultures which evolved over many hundreds of years. With the Renaissance it became possible to unite the strands of these cultures in a new and exciting synthesis which prepared the way for the birth of the modern world. This semester-long study abroad experience allows students to retrace the steps of Greek, Etruscan, Roman, medieval and Renaissance cultures by living and studying in three cities which embody these civilizations in all their richness and splendor: TuscaniaRome and either Florence (fall semester) or Venice (spring semester).

Students spend one month in Tuscania followed by one month in Rome, and then they choose to complete the experience in either Florence (fall) or Venice (spring). They follow a structured and integrated program of five 4-credit courses, which together comprise both a unique investigation into the roots of Western civilization and a grounding in modern Italian language and culture.

TOKYO: J.F. Oberlin University

Students will participate in J.F. Oberlin University's Reconnaissance Japan Program. This program was developed to allow students from other countries to study Japanese language and culture for one Semester or an academic year. The Reconnaissance Japan Program is a part of Oberlin's School of International Studies, which is dedicated to educating Japanese students about the outside world. Thus, students will be a part of a truly international student body. Oberlin's Center for International Studies offers a varied program of cultural activities and excursions in and around Tokyo. In addition to the formal program activities, students are also encouraged to take part in club or social activities on campus.


TOKYO: Meiji University

Meiji is situated in the center of Tokyo's educational and cultural district, surrounded by Asia's largest area of used bookstores. Meiji which started as a Law School in 1881, currently has a population of 33,000 students, enrolled in the Schools of Law, Commerce, Political Science and Economics, Arts and Letters, Science and Technology, Agriculture, Business Administration, Information and Communication, and the Graduate School.

Each of the Undergraduate and Graduate Schools has its own educational philosophy and aims. Each School also has its own faculty and its own curriculum, independently organized. This enables the students to study the discipline of the school that they are enrolled in from the start of their education at Meiji. Meiji University has approximately 450,950 registered alumni and has been accepting international students since 1896. Famous graduate include former Prime Ministers such as Mr. Takeo Miki and Mr. Tomiichi Murayama. Currently there are approximately 650 international students studying various disciplines at Meiji University.


VALLENDAR: WHU, Otto Beisheim School of Management

The school is AACSB, EQUIS and FIBAA-accredited. WHU's Master program was assessed to be the best in Germany in the Financial Times Master in Management Ranking 2010. All of our graduate courses as well as 80% of the undergraduate courses are taught in English. Our academic calendar complies with the American model (please see also term dates). Apart from that, our Career Service is 100% accessible for exchange students. We also offer Summer Institutes for MBA as well as for Bachelor-students.

WHU has established a unique student-exchange network with more than 170 universities around the world. No other German university-level institution comes close to enjoying so many active and high-quality partnerships.


VANCOUVER: Simon Fraser University

Students studying at Simon Faser University (SFU) have the opportunity to learn about the politics, history, and cultures of Canada and the Pacific Rim countries from the visually spectacular and culturally exciting area of Vancouver. Campus clubs, cultural events, museums, sports facilities, and other recreational events allow students to enjoy life on campus, in addition to their course studies.


VARANASI: Alliance for Global Education

The Varanasi program allows students to examine the intersections between religious life, urban studies, and the environment in contemporary India. Though it is a challenging destination for U.S. undergraduates, Varanasi is a city that has stimulated scholarship on South Asia for hundreds of years. It offers boundless, rich opportunities for research, academic study, intercultural experience, and personal reflection. The program provides a structured, balanced blend of classroom and field-based learning, including a required language course and an individualized ‘culture in practice’ component.


WARSAW: CIEE

Traditional | Warsaw, Poland

The program is intended for students who have an interest in Poland and Central Europe, as well as political, social, and/or economic transformation from a state controlled to a democratic market-based system.

Established in 1989, the program provides a broad-based academic program combined with an in-country cultural experience. The program offers students Polish language instruction and a series of specially designed courses in such fields as Central European politics, literature, history, and economics, as well as the option to enroll in Warsaw School of Economics (WSE) courses taught in English or Polish. The goals of the Central European Studies program are to help students gain a greater understanding of Central Europe, with specific emphasis on the Polish perspective and experience, while learning more about business practices and economics in Poland and the European Union through courses at the Warsaw School of Economics.


WOODS HOLE: SEA Semester

A semester with the Sea Education Association (SEA) is unlike any other study abroad program. It combines an intensive four-week shore component in Woods Hole, MA with a sea voyage either in the Atlantic/Caribbean or in the Pacific. (Depending on the time of year, some voyages may go to Nova Scotia). The interdisciplinary course work teaches more than just Maritime Studies, Nautical Science, and Oceanography; it teaches students about team work, cooperation, and seamanship. Students also learn how to sail a boat, from striking and setting sails to navigating and steering.

Note: This program fulfills most Arts & Sciences requirements for the Marine Studies minor. Please consult Peter Rosen in the Geology Department for more information.

Students may also participate in the Protecting the Phoenix Islands summer program. This 8-week summer session welcomes students to explore one of the last coral wildernesses on earth through one of two academic tracks: science or policy. The Phoenix Islands comprise the Pacific’s largest marine protected area (MPA) and were recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Students will join marine scientists from SEA, the New England Aquarium, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on an unprecedented research voyage to the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA), a region of the world which remains largely unexplored and unvisited.

 


XI’AN: Alliance for Global Education

An ancient imperial capital and eastern terminus of the Silk Road, Xi’an has long been an important crossroads for people from throughout China, Central Asia, and the Middle East, and thus a melting pot of diverse ethnic identities and religious beliefs. This Alliance program allows students to explore the historical confluences of geography, ethnicity, and religion in a city that is culturally distinct from the coastal megacities. An exhilarating two-week field study trip along the Silk Road takes students off the beaten path and ties these themes together at the crux of the semester. This program offers students 9 class hours per week of Chinese language as well as courses taught in English in several disciplines including ancient Chinese history, contemporary issues, art and anthropology.

Students may enroll for a semester.
