Student Affairs Scholarships
The Office for Student Affairs proudly administers the following scholarships opportunities which recognize the contributions of our student leaders on campus.
For 2011, these scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.

How To Nominate a Student
To nominate a student for the scholarships listed above, submit a nomination form along with all supporting documents by Wednesday, February 9, 2011 to the Office for Student Affairs at 104 Ell Hall. Students can nominate themselves, but must have a letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff nominator.

Scholarship Descriptions and Requirements
The Charles Havice Scholarship
The Charles Havice Scholarship honors the memory of Charles Havice, Dean of Chapel. This scholarship recognizes the contributions of active participants in student activities who have proven leadership ability.
• Must be a third or fourth year student
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must not be on any form of university probation
A total of one scholarship will be given to an eligible student.
The Clara & Joseph Ford Scholarship
The Clara and Joseph Ford Scholarship recognizes the contributions of students who have demonstrated good citizenship and embody leadership qualities. Recipients of this scholarship are students who are active participants in student activities and have “demonstrated a democratic and tolerant spirit and who are well disposed toward people of all creeds and races.”
In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Must be a third or fourth year student
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must not be on any form of university probation
A total of three scholarships will be given to eligible students.
The Greg Jarvis Memorial Scholarship
The Greg Jarvis Memorial Scholarships are named after Greg Jarvis, Northeastern alumnus and crew member aboard the Challenger space shuttle. Recipients of this scholarship must demonstrate the perseverance, integrity, spirit and pride, which Mr. Jarvis exemplified so well.
In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Must be a graduating senior
• Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
• Must not be on any form of university probation
• Must have served on a student organization executive board for a minimum of two semesters
A total of two scholarships will be given to two eligible seniors.
The Joseph Spear Scholarship recognizes outstanding contributions to student activites by students enrolled in the College of Engineering. Recipeints of the Joseph Spear Scholarship must have demonstrated good citizenship and exemplary leadership abilities through their involvement in student activities.
In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Must be a third or fourth year student
• Must be in the upper half of their class based on GPA
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must not be on any form of university probation
The Karen T. Rigg Shining Torch Scholarship
The Karen Rigg Shining Torch Scholarship honors the contributions of Karen Rigg, former Vice President for Student Affairs. This person is seen as a shining example within their student organization through their enthusiasm and positive attitude.
In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Must be a first or second year student
• Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
• Must not be on any form of university probation
A total of two scholarships will be given to eligible first or second year students. Faculty and staff may also nominate eligible students.
The Matthew Shepard and Morris S. Kay Scholarship
The Matthew Shepard and Morris S. Kay Scholarship honors the memory of Matthew Shepard, a gay youth whose 1998 death was the result of a brutal hate crime. This scholarship recognizes students who are actively working for gay, lesbian, and GLBT justice issues or other social justice issues.
In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must not be on any form of university probation
A total of two scholarships will be given to eligible students.
The Richard Cardinal Cushing Award*
The Richard Cardinal Cushing Award was established in 1978 through the generosity of the Massachusetts Committee of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. This scholarship is awarded annually to "a Catholic, a Protestant, and a Jewish student who embody the principles of brotherhood and justice and who, through their work on campus, have become positive forces for religious understanding."
In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Must be at least a sophomore undergraduate student
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must not be on any form of university probation
• Must have a record that exemplifies good campus citizenship
A total of up to three scholarships will be given to eligible students.

The Thomas I Atkins Social Justice Scholarship
The Thomas I Atkins Social Justice Scholarship was established to honor Thomas I Atkins, the first African-American city councilor of Boston. This scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership on behalf of social justice issues.
In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Must be a first year student
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must not be on any form of university probation
A total of three scholarships will be given to eligible first year students.
