SportCorps
It is estimated that more than 23 million children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese, and physical inactivity directly causes the deaths of more than 1.9 million people annually around the world. Seeing the vast need for sustainable programming to address these issues both domestically and internationally, Sport in Society has created a new arm of its organization called, SportCorps. It will mobilize a new generation of leaders working to strengthen communities through the power of sport.
SportCorps harnesses the passion and dedication of youth leaders who embrace the ideals of service and community activism, while utilizing the vehicle of sport to make lasting impact in communities around the globe. SportCorps builds upon Sport in Society’s Fitz UYS Health Connection and its outreach programs. The program captures the energy of successful service models such as AmeriCorps and PeaceCorps, and supports a growing national and international movement focused on utilizing the power of sport as a catalyst for creating healthy communities.
SportCorps team members will be placed in the heart of underserved communities, where they will:
-
conduct neighborhood needs assessments,
-
create and deliver sports programming that directly impacts the community
-
form partnerships with community leaders, and
-
engage and empower individuals to improve the health of their own communities
