Sport in Society’s Premier Panel Discussion a Success

September 24, 2013

Sport in Society hosted the first sport-based youth development forum of the 2013-2014 academic year on September 19th. The forum focused on Building a Positive Culture, and included panelists Max Fripp, Tracey Britton, Becky Nyce, and Amanda Smidt. The panelists addressed representatives from local sport based youth development organizations about why culture is important and how can it be maintained and measured. They also provided concrete examples from their experiences. The panelists stressed the importance of consistency and identity in regards to the values of their organization, recognizing that the culture should permeate throughout the staff and spread to the youth with whom they work.

Those attending felt that the panel had a wide range of expertise, and that having four different perspectives was beneficial, especially when different organizations face similar issues. This gave an opportunity to see how other organizations would handle those situations regarding organizational culture.  Finally, the attendees also valued the opportunity to network with other organizations in the area, and hoped to involve other organizations in their programs.

Sport in Society is offering four more related events in the upcoming year, related to Sports Based Youth Development. The next event will be on the topic of Nonprofit Management for Sports Based Youth Development organizations on November 21, more information can be found here.

Sport in Society will also be hosting a seminar series featuring Rick Arrowood, J.D., a Graduate Professor in Northeastern’s Master of Science in Nonprofit Management and Master of Science in Leadership, beginning October 10. More information regarding this seminar series can be found here.
