Olympism and Social Justice Institute

The Olympism and Social Justice Institute reflects Sport in Society’s dedication to Olympism, with a particular focus on social justice and human rights. A philosophy of life, Olympism uses sport to encourage holistic human development and to create a peaceful society that values human dignity. According to the first principle of Olympic Charter, "Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles." Sport in Society promotes the ideals of Olympism through research, education and advocacy in the local, national and global community.

In line with the ideals of Olympism, Sport in Society focuses upon the ability of sports to serve as a tool for social justice—a form of justice that seeks to promote human rights, diversity, inclusion, equality, peace, and fairness. Sport in Society believes in the uniqueness of sport to bridge cultural gaps, resolve conflict, and educate human beings. The Center recognizes the potential of sports to help achieve important objectives of development, such as social integration, peace building, and economic justice. The programs of SIS are based upon the fundamental position that all citizens of the world deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. The fourth principle of the Olympic Charter affirms, "The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play." Thus, SIS is committed to Olympism as an instrument for advancing human rights and bringing about positive and sustainable social change.
