Leadership Education

The Center for the Study of Sport in Society leverages 30 years of developing and implementing training and education to build strong leaders and strong brands, and remains the global thought leader on social responsibility in sport. Sport in Society’s thought leadership is bolstered by our position at Northeastern University, home to some of the world’s foremost academic researchers who play a vital role in our program development and evaluation.

The Approach

The Center’s training programs engage participants in an interactive facilitated dialogue that provides an educational experience that is both informative and interesting. Online learning is a key tool in all programs. Programs can be developed in both online and hybrid models and students are given access to continually updated online resources.

Academic Degree and Certificate Programs

Academic Programs are offered in partnership with Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies. Current program offerings include a Master of Sports Leadership. Key components of the Center’s Academic and Certificate Programs include opportunities for service learning and online education platforms

Train the Trainer Programs

Train the Trainer Programs dive deeper into our key focus areas and provide formal training in how to incorporate these issues into leadership strategy within sport organizations and community programs. Over the course of the 16-24 hour, 2-3 day trainings, participants learn the critical elements of education in each area, learn to use Sport in Society curriculum, are given an opportunity to facilitate the curriculum, and complete a community outreach project based on the given topic. By participating in these institutes participants can become certified to deliver Sport in Society trainings in one or more of the following areas:

Awareness Raising Sessions

Awareness Raising Sessions provide an introductory understanding of how the above social issues relate to sports and leadership. Establishing a basic understanding of these issues and their intersection with sport allows for leveraging of sport as a powerful social change agent. Awareness raising seminars also introduce participants into Sport in Society’s broader network of organizations and people who support the mission and values of Sport in Society through their work, collaborations and actions.

Conferences and Professional Development Events

As the community of values-based leaders in sport has grown, so has the need to engage this community with one another to enhance learning, share best practices, and create ongoing dialogue about the future of collaborative action. Over the past three years, Sport in Society has successfully united leaders from around the globe at the annual Power of Sport Summit, and on a local level has brought together current and emerging leaders for events focused on collaborative learning and professional development. In addition to these ongoing activities, SIS has the capacity to support the planning and organization, facilitation and evaluation of these events for organizations that want to achieve sustainable impact.
