Double Dutch Friendship Tournament 2013

February 28, 2013

On Saturday, February 2nd, Sport in Society, along with the Red Auerbach Youth Foundation and CHAMPS Boston, hosted the first Double Dutch tournament of this year at the Mildred Avenue Community Center. Jumpers of every level had the opportunity to participate and jump with their teams. With the help of coaches and volunteers, the Double Dutch Friendship Tournament was a great success.

Teams ranging from grade 1 to 12 participated in the tournament. Judges observed jumpers in the 20-second compulsory test and took count of the jumps in the speed test.  Jumpers were very focused, while their teammates at both ends of the rope vocalized a rhythm to support the jumper. After all teams competed, one of the teams gave a demonstration in which they demonstrated teamwork and effort. The participants’ sense of fun and excitement captured the spirit of the day.

In addition to the various ages, there was a great mix of boys and girls on each team, illustrating the rising popularity of this old-school sport.  “This tournament showed me that anyone can be a Double Dutch jumper,” said Joe Rowell, Sport in Society Community Operative.

The next tournament, the Boston Public School’s Middle School Double Dutch Tournament, will be on March 2nd at the Mildred Ave Community Center in Mattapan. Please click here for further details. We hope to see you there!
