Deb Jencunas Joins SIS Staff as Senior Associate DirectorJanuary 06, 2013
Sport in Society, a Northeastern University Center, is thrilled to announce that Deb Jencunas has joined the team as Senior Associate Director. With over 30 years of experience working in education, Deb will provide vision, leadership, and direction to all aspects of Sport in Society’s education and outreach programs.
Since coming to Northeastern three years ago from Boston Public Schools, she has demonstrated tremendous insight and work ethic while providing leadership for cutting edge programs that required her knack for engaging people in effective collaboration and strong organizational skill-set. As the Director of the Fast Track Program at Northeastern’s College of Professional Studies, Deb was responsible for the management of the accelerated degree completion program. She has also spent time as the Director of Partnerships, where she was responsible for developing academic programs aimed at enhancing accessibility to degree completion programs for nontraditional students and for developing partnerships with community organizations.
Prior to her arrival at Northeastern, Deb built a strong reputation over many years of service working for Boston Public Schools. As a central office administrator for BPS, she served as a liaison between the administrative unit and community-based organizations. For the leadership and direction she provided while supervising the mental health services in 120 Boston schools, she received numerous citations from Commonwealth of Massachusetts House of Representatives and State Senate. Deb also served BPS as the Assistant Headmaster for a small theme-based high school that was the first of its kind in Boston. Funded by the Gates Foundation, the small school design was part of a major school reform effort aimed at increasing student retention and academic performance. At the School, she was responsible for developing the themed-based curriculum and related programs. She also designed professional development programs; developed partnerships with industry related organizations and secured federal grant funding to support this work. Lastly, she designed and implemented a dual credit program between the high school and Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, and secured funding to support internships and summer jobs related to environmental science.
Deb has a Masters Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Business Administration. Additionally, Deb has an athletic background and enjoys running. As an accomplished runner, she has qualified and completed several well-known races, including both the Boston and Montreal marathons. Deb brings a wealth of knowledge and embodies the values of Northeastern University and Sport in Society. We look forward to seeing where her addition to the staff will lead the center.
