Suzanne Bergenhenegouwen is a research and curriculum development assistant for the Spring 2013 semester. She is a graduate student in American Studies at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Being a speed-skater in elementary school and a basketball player since the age of 11, sports has impacted her life from an early age. Suzanne used her experience in basketball to work with youth at a summer camp, where she organized sport events for children of single-parent families. For several years, she has also coached the game of basketball to local youth. Originally from Groningen, her interest in the American society sparked during her senior year at a high school in Fort Worth, TX, and from conversations with her grandfather, who saw family members crossing the pond in search of a better life. Working at Sport in Society gives her the opportunity to experience working in society at first hand, while hoping to make a difference in it. She therefore hopes to be valuable as an assistant in research and curriculum development during her time in Boston.
