The Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service offers the Richard Cardinal Cushing Award and the William H. Wildes Scholarship—the latter of which is co-administered by Northeastern’s Office of Student Financial Services.

A volunteer selection committee, composed of university employees, reviews and discusses each student’s application, cover form, statement form, and letter of reference. The committee recommends award recipients after conducting personal interviews with each finalist. The Office of Student Financial Services and Office of Student Affairs offer final approval and publicly acknowledge the recipient at a Student Affairs Scholarship reception held in April.

Applications must be submitted online, and can be found here.

The Richard Cardinal Cushing Award

The Richard Cardinal Cushing Award was established in 1978 through the generosity of the Massachusetts Committee of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. Income from the scholarship’s endowment will be awarded annually to up to one Catholic, one Protestant, and one Jewish student who embodies the principles of brotherhood and justice and who, through his or her work on campus, has become a positive force for religious understanding.

 Each Cushing Award Candidate Must:

Be a Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish student at Northeastern
Embody the principles of brotherhood and justice
Become a positive force for religious understanding
Demonstrate being a positive force as expressed through their work on campus
Be a full-time Northeastern undergraduate student
Be an upperclassman (Freshmen allowed only in “unusual circumstances”)
Be in good academic standing
Not be on any form of university probation
Have a record that exemplifies good campus citizenship in all respects
Be “making normal progress”

Additional Considerations:

A student is normally not eligible for a second award during his or her Northeastern tenure
No more than one award recipient from each faith category is allowed per year
Awards do not have to be granted annually if no worthy candidate is found. In such case, “surplus” funds will be divided among the next years’ recipients.

An award of approximately $1,000-$1,500 is credited to the Northeastern account of each recipient of the Cushing Award.

The William H. Wildes Scholarship Fund

The William H. Wildes Scholarship Fund was established as the result of a bequest received in 2011 from the Reverend William H. Wildes. Income from the scholarship’s endowment will be awarded annually to a student or students who have demonstrable financial need. Eligible undergraduate students of any faith or spirituality will embody a spiritually healthy life and, through their work and personal example, help to advance spiritual understanding and cooperation at Northeastern.

Each Wildes Scholarship Candidate Must:

Be a student of any faith or spirituality
Embody a spiritually healthy life
Through their work and personal example, help to advance spiritual understanding and cooperation at Northeastern
Have demonstrable financial need, which will be determined by Student Financial Services
Be a full-time Northeastern undergraduate student
Be in good academic standing
Not be on any form of university probation
Have a record that exemplifies good campus citizenship in all respects
Be “making normal progress”

Additional Considerations:

The scholarship may be renewed during a student’s Northeastern tenure
One or more worthy and deserving students will be awarded the scholarship each April

A scholarship of approximately $500-$1,000 is credited to the Northeastern account of each recipient of the Wildes Scholarship.
