Discover Your Wholeness: Wellness in the Sacred Space
The NU Spiritual Life Center is committed to a holistic model of well-being for the individual and the community.... one which honors a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit. A number of programs are offered in the Sacred Space to support the overlap of spirituality and wellness.
For days/times of all of the following offerings, please check our calendar elsewhere on this site.
Guided Meditation Besides its value as a spiritual and religious tradition, meditation is proven to decrease the negative effects of stress on the body/mind, and increase focus. Free weekly open guided meditation sessions are offered in the Sacred Space, in which a variety of meditation styles are explored throughout the semester. These are suitable for all levels of experience, including beginner. Participants are free to drop-in every week, or any week. Cushions and chairs are provided. In addition, occasional special programs in meditation are provided to enhance the weekly sittings.
Yoga Yoga is a great combination of spiritual practice, strength and flexibility builder, and stress-buster. Weekly semester-long Yoga classes are offered in a variety of styles to the NU community. Classes are taught by certified Yoga instructors, and are suitable for beginner- intermediate levels of experience. Participation is by advance registration only, at the beginning of each semester, and a discounted fee is charged. Yoga mats and props are provided. Special free Yoga sessions are also offered regularly throughout the year.
Reiki This peaceful healing technique is used to elicit the relaxation response and assist in restoring the mind-body balance. Reiki (a Japanese word meaning "Universal life-force energy") is a very gentle non-invasive touch therapy used regularly in hospitals, health care contexts, spiritual centers, and more. The Spiritual Life Center offers a program of Reiki opportunities including free mini-sessions from certified practitioners, and training in Reiki levels 1 and 2 certification at reduced rates for members of the NU community.
The Labyrinth Walking the Labyrinth is an ancient spiritual meditative tradition, now used by many for Wellness. Labyrinths can be found in hospitals, schools, churches, and outdoor plazas and parks. Our portable Labyrinth in the Sacred Space is set up annually for use by the community. NU student groups may also request on-site use of the Labyrinth.
Spiritual Wellness Week This special annual week offers programs and opportunities to experience and learn more about a variety of wellness traditions and healing modalities. Spiritual Wellness Week in late October is a great time to learn more about ways to balance your body, mind and spirit!
