The Sacred Space
The award-winning Sacred Space is utilized for a broad range of puposes including student events, worship services, interfaith dialogues, meditation and yoga classes, etc. In addition to hosting weekly groups and special events, the Space is frequently open for individuals to use on a walk-in basis for private prayer, meditation and peaceful time.
- Capacity- 120
- Features- The Space is normally left empty with area carpets down. 120 chairs, a movable table/altar, a movable lectern/pulpit, yoga mats, and meditation cushions are all available by request.
- Additional features- adjustable dimmers in the back-lit glass panel walls and overhead spotlights allow for a variety of moods. Acoustics are excellent and rarely require a microphone, although an amplification system is available.

The Reflection Room
Adjoining the Sacred Space east entrance is the Reflection Room, an intimate library and reception/meeting space where small groups can gather to share their faith, listen and learn, or join discussions. Reference books from various faith traditions are provided, and individuals are welcome to use this area for study and spiritual reading (a more extensive lending library is available in the Spiritual Life Center office).

- Features- The Reflection Room has a conference table, as well as a comfortable sitting space with cushioned chairs. Ample side tables can accomodate food.

The Ablution and Private Prayer/Meditation area
Adjoining the Sacred Space west entrance is the Ablution area, offering worshippers a private contemplation space, as well as a facility to perform ritual ablutions.
- Capacity- 5
- Features- The Ablution Area features a low stainless-steel sink with several water faucets, which allows for ablution at foot level.
- Additional features- A curtained and carpeted area adjacent to the sink accomodates 1-5 people for private prayer or meditation. This area is especially useful for those wishing to pray while the Sacred Space in is use.
- Location- West entrance of the Sacred Space, 200 Ell Hall

- Availability- Personal walk-in use during open hours requires no advance booking, and is based on availability. Not available for use by groups.
The Spiritual Life Center office
The office staff are happy to help you reserve a space, answer questions and concerns, arrange workshops for classes and residence halls, assist student religious organizations, offer spirituality books and resources, and arrange meetings with chaplains. Our staff includes a director, administrative assistant, chaplains of many faiths, and helpful student assistants. The office is located at 203 Ell Hall.

(Hours may vary over summers, holidays, and academic intersessions. The Sacred Space and Spiritual Life Center office are closed for the 4th of July, Thanksgiving break, and the NU winter intersession time.)

“I understand that…
- Fire code prohibits the use of candles, incense etc. (religious needs may be discussed with the Director of Spiritual Life);
- I am responsible for leaving the requested areas clean and in the way I found them;
- Funds/money may not be collected in the areas, except by the express permission of the Director of Spiritual Life;
- This request is not confirmed until I receive written notification from the Spiritual Life Center (allow 2 weeks from our receipt of your form));
- The NU Spiritual Life Center reserves the right, in rare instances, to reschedule or cancel an event; and
- The NU Spiritual Life Center reserves the right to refuse future use of the areas, should these conditions be broken.”
