A Mission, Model, and Agreement for the Northeastern University Interfaith Council

Mission Statement:

The Northeastern University Interfaith Council (NUIC) exists to promote communication, cooperation, and community among the diverse religious and spiritual groups and individuals of Northeastern University. NUIC creates and supports transformative experiences of spiritual growth, ethical reflection, interfaith and intercultural dialogue, community service, and social action.

Our Mission

To educate students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment. To create and translate knowledge to meet global and societal needs.

Our Vision

To be a university that expands the meaning and impact of our engagement in the world using our knowledge and resources as positive forces for change in both our local communities and our global society.

Structure

To be a university that expands the meaning and impact of our engagement in the world using our knowledge and resources as positive forces for change in both our local communities and our global society.

Membership

Two representatives of each recognized religious or spiritual group on campus are named to NUIC. (Official recognition of groups is through both Campus Activities and CSDS. Some groups may be affiliated with CSDS alone.) For groups whose average meeting attendance is under 10 people, a single representative may be named. Recognition and funding are contingent upon active NUIC attendance and participation. All students are welcome at NUIC Dinner Dialogues, meetings, events, and programs.

Student Agreement

> Spiritual and religious learning about the traditions, practices, beliefs of each individual group.

> Authentic dialogue: With loving hearts and open minds, we agree to reflect upon the words of our peers and to speak with honesty and compassion. We will speak our truths as we understand them, and when our opinions differ, we will agree to disagree. We will recognize diversity as an asset to be engaged and celebrated, not a threat to be feared.

> Serving our communities and the wider world: We are committed to being a community that serves the needs of others and supports people in the adversities they face. We share a vision of a more just, peaceful, humane, and sustainable world, for ourselves and the generations to come.

> Promoting pluralism by valuing difference and seeking common ground. We accept and embrace our individualities while passionately pursuing a shared purpose and vision.

> Confidentiality: With an understanding that opening ourselves to others in dialogue invites vulnerability, we will respect the private needs of one another by keeping what is said in the group securely in our hearts.

> Striving to be models of integrity for our communities and the global community. We will constantly strive to better ourselves, to “walk our talk,” and to “practice what we preach.”

Understanding and making manifest these core, common values and aspirations:

> Respect for one another and for our families, cultures, and communities of origin.

> Cultivating time and space in our lives for reflection.

> Recognizing that “we are Northeastern” and that what unites us as students, as people of faith and conscience, and as human beings and global citizens is greater than what divides us.

> Practicing non-judgmentalism.

> Holding fast and passionately to our core convictions, while seeking and finding commonalities.

> Serving others’ needs and promoting human solidarity.

> Nurturing positive attitudes and empathy for others.

> Practicing laughter, fun, love, and support.

> Being open toward others’ feelings, ideas, and experiences.

> Practicing laughter, fun, love, and support.

> Being consistent and reliable in our commitments to one another, to NUIC, and to our member groups.
