Alcoholics Anonymous twelve-step support group
Fridays 6-7pm
Meets in the Reflection Room adjacent to the Sacred Space. This group is hosted by the SLC, but is run as a peer group through the Western Mass AA Central Committee.
Resources available from the Spiritual Life Center:
– Pastoral conversations/counseling with chaplains
– Assistance in planning NU community worship events and memorial services
– Reservation of the center's spaces for religious/spiritual groups to meet and worship
– Items available for on-site use include a library of books and sacred texts, DVDs and DVD player, CDs and CD player, meditation cushions, meditation benches, portable labyrinth, and yoga mats
Group workshops offered by the Spiritual Life Center:
The following on-site workshops are offered in the Sacred Space to NU student groups, residence floors, classes, and offices free of charge (except Yoga classes, which incur a teachers' fee). Minimum 10 participants. Ample advance request time is required.
a- " Walking the Labyrinth"- A peaceful walking meditation experience with our special labyrinth... a unique way to center yourself! Best for groups of 10-15 people. (30- 45min)
b- "Baraka"- a film viewing & discussion. Don't miss this amazing, transcendent, difficult and beautiful film made without words. Just view and let it soak in, or add a great opportunity for engaged group discussion. Good for groups of 10-40 people. (2- 2.5 hours)
c- "Yoga in the Sacred Space" private group sessions for groups of 10-25 people can be arranged, based on space and teacher availability. Yoga mats are provided for use on-site. These sessions incur the cost of the Yoga teacher's fee, please inquire with the Spiritual Life Center office for details. (60 min or 90 min sessions)

- 2011 Richard Cardinal Cushing Award Scholarship nominations
will be accepted January 10 through February 16
Annual scholarship are awarded to 3 students (from Catholic, Jewish & Protestant denominations) who "embody the principles of brotherhood and justice and who, through their work on campus, have become positive forces for religious understanding." Provided by a grant from the Massachusetts Committee of Catholics, Protestants and Jews. Nominations/ self-nominations accepted January 10- February 9, 2011. An Introduction to Buddhism & Buddhist Meditation
Three Sessions: Sundays 1/23, 2/6, and 2/20, 6- 7:30pm
Each session offers a theoretical and practical investigation of the Dharma (or teachings of the Buddha) through a meditation, teaching, and open discussion / Q&A. The series culminates with an opportunity for a half-day retreat in April. Instructor, Josh Summers.

A way to annually and publicly remember the Holocaust, not only as an historical fact and as a memorial to its millions of victims, but also as a warning and way to apply lessons learned to contemporary issues. All events are sponsored by the Holocaust Awareness Committee. Film showing & discussion with Frieda Grayzel, 12- 2pm
Frieda (Tenenbaum) Grayzel is a child survivor of the Holocaust from Poland. Between the ages of five and ten she experienced the loss of her home; the murder of her parents, four-year-old sister and most of her extended family; starvation, cold, disease, life in a ghetto and a labor camp; and seven months in the infamous concentration camp at Auschwitz. On 2004 she participated in filming a documentary Surviving Auschwitz: Children of the Shoah about her life and that of another child survivor, Tova Friedman. The two, each with one of their children, travelled to Poland and Germany to retrace their steps and tell their stories to the next generation. This event represents the annual Philip N. Backstrom Jr. Survivor Lecture Series, and is free and open to all.

"Shaping Losses and Living in History" with Lori Lefkovitz, Ruderman Professor of Jewish Studies, Professor of English, and Director of Jewish Studies. The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Lefkovitz will speak about inherited memories and the ethics of ventriloquism, how children of trauma appropriate the narratives of their parents. Menachem Rosensaft presents The Transference of Memory: Holocaust Remembrance in the 21st Century. Born in 1948 in the Displaced Persons camp of Bergen-Belsen, he has long been a leader in Holocaust remembrance activities. In September 2010, President Obama appointed him to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. He received the 2003 Elie Wiesel Holocaust Remembrance Award of Israel Bonds. The annual Morton Lecture is followed by a reception with light refreshments. This event is free and open to all.

Celebrate the renovation and re-installation of this beautiful historical stained glass window, entitled "Moving Toward the Light" by artist Sara Feldman. The window is the only surviving object of a fire that destroyed the Bacon Memorial Chapel over a decade ago. Bishop Masereka, a retired Anglican bishop of Kasese, Uganda, is founder and leader of the Bishop Masareka Christian Foundation (BMCF). The BMCF works to provide both education and medical support to the impoverished people of Western Uganda. BMCF works to keep orphans in school by providing financial support and counseling. The center also provides medical care, education and coimmunity support for hundreds of orphans and their families. You are invited to join Bishop Masereka for a conversation about his work in BMCF, his dreams for the future, and opportunities to help shape a vision for internships and fellowships. Recognized as a realized spiritual teacher and master lecturer rooted in the Jain faith, Gurudev was born in 1922 in Rajasthan India.
