The Richard Cardinal Cushing Award

   was established in 1978 through the generosity of the Massachusetts Committee of Catholics, Protestants, & Jews.  Income from the scholarship’s endowment will be awarded annually to up to one Catholic, one Protestant, and one Jewish student who embody the principles of brotherhood and justice and who, through their work on campus, have become positive forces for religious understanding.


Cushing Award primary criteria: each candidate must…

¨      Be a Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish student at Northeastern University

¨      Embody the principles of brotherhood and justice

¨      Have become a positive force for religious understanding (both within their own faith and with those of other faiths)

¨      Demonstrate being a positive force as expressed through their work on campus

 

Cushing Award secondary criteria: each candidate must…

¨      Be a full-time NU undergraduate student

¨      Be an upper-class student (freshman allowed only in “unusual circumstances”)

¨   Be in good academic standing

¨   Not be on any form of University probation

¨      Have a record that exemplifies good campus citizenship in all respects

¨      Be “making normal progress”

 

Additional considerations:

¨      A student is normally not eligible for a second award in their time at NU

¨      No more than one award recipient from each faith category is allowed per year

¨      All awards do not have to be granted each year if no worthy candidate is found. In such case, “surplus” funds will be divided among the next years’ recipients.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

The William H. Wildes Scholarship Fund

   was established as the result of a bequest received in 2011 from The Rev. William H. Wildes. Income from the scholarship’s endowment will be awarded annually to student/s who have demonstrable financial need. Eligible undergraduate student/s of any faith or spirituality will embody a spiritually healthy life and through their work and personal example, help to advance spiritual understanding and cooperation at Northeastern.

 

Wildes Scholarship primary criteria: each candidate must…

¨      Be a student of any faith or spirituality

¨      Embody a spiritually healthy life

¨      Through their work and personal example, help to advance spiritual understanding and cooperation at Northeastern University

¨      Have demonstrable financial need (determined by student Financial Services)

 

Wildes Scholarship secondary criteria: each candidate must…

¨      Be a full-time NU undergraduate student

¨      Be in good academic standing

¨      Not be on any form of University probation

¨      Have a record that exemplifies good campus citizenship in all respects

¨      Be “making normal progress”

 

Additional considerations:

¨      The Scholarship may be renewed in succeeding years (ie awarded in 2 or more years to the same student)

¨      One or more worthy and deserving students will be awarded the Scholarship each April

                                                                                                           

                                                                                            

Cushing Award and Wildes Scholarship recipients are determined through this process:

 

¨      The Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service administers the Cushing Award. The Office of Student Financial Services & CSDS co-administer the Wildes Scholarship

¨      The Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service forms a volunteer selection committee composed of University employees

¨      Members of the selection committee may not themselves nominate candidates

¨      The Cushing/ Wildes Scholarship Selection Committee may consider all qualified applicants for either award

¨      The committee selects finalists by review and discussion of application/  packets (materials include cover form; statement from student; and letter of reference). Applications must be submitted on-line (application available at https://orgsync.com/44537/chapter

¨      The committee recommends award recipients from among the finalists, after conducting personal interviews with each finalist

¨      The Office of Student Financial Services and Office of Student Affairs offer final approval of the selection committee’s Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service, and publically announced/ acknowledged at a Student Affairs Scholarship reception in April

¨       An award of approx. $1,000- $1,500 is credited to the NU account of each recipient of the Cushing Award. A scholarship of approx. $500- $1,000 is credited to the NU account of each recipient of the Wildes Scholarship.
