The department is pleased to announce that Dr. Doreen Lee has been awarded an IIAS Fellowship in the Asian Cities research cluster at the International Institute for Asian Studies, located in Leiden, the Netherlands.
Dr. Lee will be taking up residence in Leiden in close proximity to her research archives, and will be joining a community of international scholars and experts on Asia at the Institute. This award will enable Dr. Lee to complete her first major study of Indonesian activist movements and their role in transforming Indonesian democracy and public culture. The study, to be published as Pemuda Fever: Nationalism, Youth, and Public Culture in Urban Indonesia, figures to be an important study about nationalist traditions and the complex political currents running deep beneath the surface of the world’s most populous Muslim nation. Congratulations to Doreen!
