Northeastern University School of General Studies
What is the SGS Peer Tutoring Program?

The Peer Tutoring Program in the School of General Studies (SGS) brings successful former SGS students, currently attending Northeastern, back to SGS to work as peer tutors. The SGS peer tutors work with current SGS students seeking academic assistance in SGS courses. The SGS Peer Tutoring Program employs only SGS alumni as peer tutors based on their academic expertise and their understanding of the SGS experience. The SGS Peer Tutoring Program is nationally certified by the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA).

Mission statement

The major goal of the Peer Tutoring Program in SGS is to meet its students’ academic needs. Its focus is to provide academic support and a strong community base to its students. It is committed to promoting independent, active learning among the students it assists. It is also committed to improving and expanding its services through a collaborative effort by the SGS administration, the program director, all the SGS peer tutors, the entire SGS faculty, and all the students it serves. It is expected that peer tutoring will have a direct and positive effect on improving SGS students’ academic achievements, as well as promote a strong community among students, peer tutors, and faculty.

Program history

The School of General Studies Peer Tutoring Program was formally established during the winter of 1995. The School of General Studies (SGS) includes only first-year students, and SGS instructors teach all of its courses. The philosophy of our tutoring program is to bring successful former SGS students, currently attending classes at Northeastern University (NU), back to SGS to work as peer tutors. This philosophy remains a mainstay of SGS peer tutoring, which continues to be only available by former SGS students for current SGS students in SGS courses.

The SGS Peer Tutoring Program is committed to providing free academic assistance to all SGS students in an academic environment in which personal growth and development is a priority. The program is dedicated to fostering long-term and independent learning among the SGS students it serves. The success of this program is attributed to the highly trained, highly competent and highly motivated peer tutors and administrative staff.
