of lifelong learners: Become an SGS peer tutor.
Requirements
The best candidates to be peer tutors are current School of General
Studies students or alumni who are highly dependable. They also
need to have excellent communications skills, strong recommendations
from their instructors, an interest in working one-on-one or in
small groups with their peers, a minimum 3.0 GPA, and a solid command
of the subject they want to tutor: English, Math, History, Sociology,
and/or Economics.
All SGS peer tutors have to commit to ongoing and systematic tutor
training. They also have to be available during activities period
for walk-in services and meetings. Tutors are members of the SGS
Peer Tutors Committee, which also includes SGS faculty and staff.
Benefits
We support our peer tutors and encourage them to be students first,
and peer tutors second. There are many benefits associated with
becoming an SGS peer tutor. Tutors have flexible hours, gain valuable
work experience, earn $7-9 per hour, receive tutor training, and
use their knowledge to help other SGS students. Tutors become part
of a very exclusive group and develop into mentors, leaders and
role models. There is also an opportunity to become a nationally
certified tutor.
Application information
School of General Studies students interested in becoming peer
tutors have to meet all the requiments as well as complete an application.
Applications can be picked up from the peer tutoring office and
returned to the peer-tutoring director at 250 Ryder Hall.
