The Windows firewall checks all incoming network traffic to help block criminals and malware from connecting to your computer. Enabling the firewall is an essential step in preventing harm occurring to your computer. Below are instructions on how to enable the firewall for Windows 7 and XP systems.

Microsoft Windows 7
- Click ‘Start’ and click ‘Control Panel’
- Click ‘All Control Panel Items’
- Click ‘Windows Firewall’
- From the left pane, click ‘Turn Windows Firewall on or off’
- Select the ‘Turn on Windows Firewall’ option for both ‘Home or Work (private)’ and ‘Public Network location settings’
Microsoft Windows XP
- Select ‘Control Panel’, and double-clicking ‘Network and Internet Connections’ to run the Networking wizard
- When you have enabled networking for your computer, your system may have to be restarted.
- Double-click ‘Networking and Internet Connections’, and access the properties of the LAN connection to which the Personal Firewall is going to be established.
- Click the ‘Personal Firewall’ tab.
- Select the ‘Enable the Internet Personal Firewall’ check box for this connection.
- Click the ‘Settings’ button.
- Select the programs, protocols, and services for the Personal Firewall configuration.
