Welcome Week 2015: Favorite South Lake Union Spots

Northeastern University-Seattle is located in the heart of the South Lake Union (SLU) neighborhood, the rapidly growing technology center of Seattle. As new buildings and restaurants seem to pop up over night, the neighborhood has a lot to offer for students visiting campus.

At Wednesday night’s Neighborhood Vendor Fair students will be able to connect with local businesses and services, below are student and staff recommendations of some favorite locations in SLU.

Favorite Lunch Spot 

  • Food Trucks! Every Monday – Friday the streets of South Lake Union are lined with delicious food option. A daily schedule is posted here.
      • Explosive, Cheese Wizards and Caravan Crepes were named as staff favorites.
  • Kigo Kitchen – Fun Fact, there are only two Kigo Kitchen’s in the world and the other happens to be on Northeastern’s Boston campus.
  • Cactus – Recommended for a sit down meal.
  • Portage Bay Café – A classic brunch spot, known for Vegan offerings and the breakfast bar.
  • Brown Bag – Many staff and students prefer to bring their own lunch and campus supports with refrigerators and microwaves in both locations.

Coffee Fix

  • Uptown Espresso – This spot was most recommended by staff on campus.
    • Favorite drinks: London Fog, Soy Latte
  • Starbucks – Of course it’s hard to not find a Starbucks in Seattle and there is one located just across Terry Ave.
    • Favorite drinks: Black Iced Coffee, White Chocolate Mocha
  • Specialty’s Café and Bakery – Serving Peets Coffee.
    • Favorite drinks: Maple Latte
  • Kakao – If you love chocolate.
    • Favorite Drink: Affogato
  • Top Pot – If you need a donut to go with your coffee

Everything Else

  • Bartell Drugs – Located just off Mercer, this convenience store and pharmacy will have almost any daily need item you are looking for.
  • Whole Foods – The closest grocery store to campus, has a wide variety of locally-made products and a large salad bar and hot buffet for meals on the go.
