Community celebrates new campus expansion

Northeastern University–Seattle invited friends, neighbors and members of the global Northeastern network to raise a toast and celebrate the recent expansion of the South Lake Union campus.

Northeastern President Joseph Aoun, new Provost Jim Bean and esteemed faculty including, Dr. Ian Gorton, Alessandro Vespignani, Mike Kuntz and Vanessa Villavicencio, joined in the celebration.

“The Seattle campus is a knowledge hub in heart of SLU innovation,” Dean Tayloe Washburn said to the crowd in attendance. “Tonight we are celebrating our 3rd facility after 2 ½ years, with 10,000 square feet of space dedicated to providing students with skills needed in this economy and world.”

Dean Washburn thanked the architect team from Weber Thompson, who created the remarkable and innovative LEED Gold certified Terry Thomas building; the Perkins+Will Seattle team, who designed a vibrant, open space for the 3rd Floor; and Scott Construction and Hill International, who brought the space to life.

In addition to the many Northeastern colleagues in Boston and the support of community partners, like the Institute For Systems Biology, that helped make expansion possible, Dean Washburn reminded everyone of the final and most important group to recognize: the Seattle graduate students!

“At Northeastern we embrace a concept of ‘Networked for Life.’” said Dean Washburn. “You are all by being here now a part of our network, and we look forward to providing value and graduates for you for many years.”
