Advanced Artificial Intelligence programs tested with 4th Grade Biology

Natural Language Processing Meet-up’s latest networking opportunity brought Dr. Peter Clark, research manager at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, to Northeastern University’s Seattle campus last week. The event was organized by Dr. Rutu Mulkar, who will be teaching a MS Computer Science course in Artificial Intelligence at the Seattle campus this fall.

Dr. Clark presented on Aristo, a project to create a knowledgeable computer that can logically answer text-based questions by searching within its databases and finding patterns.

The big test for Aristo is 4th grade biology, which often requires common-sense knowledge to tackle a wide range of scientific questions from the food chain to conductive materials.

Dr. Clark outlined the challenges to teach a computer how to interpret inferential knowledge and determine answers reliably and the various Natural Language Processing techniques the Institute layers to create a complex multi-step process for the computer to solve questions. He also compared how Aristo differs from other famous artificial intelligence question answerers.

Dr. Mulkar and the Natural Language Processing Meet-up will host another discussion, this time on Deep Machine Reading, at the Seattle campus on August 11. RSVP to join us.

The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence is a non-profit organization looking to make an impact through advances in artificial intelligence research and engineering. Their offices on the north end of Lake Union currently supports around 50 employees and Dr. Clark said the Institute is actively hiring for those interested in artificial intelligence research.
