  • Sonia E. Rolland, JD, PhD- Associate Professor of Law

  • Professor Rolland’s research examines the intersection of different legal regimes to improve the understanding of an increasingly multi-layered international and transnational legal order. In recent years, her work has focused on trade, development and environmental law. Her article, “The Precautionary Principle: Development of an International Standard” (23 Michigan Journal of International Law 429, 2002), has received several awards and its findings have been endorsed by the International Law Commission in a United Nations General Assembly Resolution (Third Report to the General Assembly of the United Nations on the Legal Regime for the Allocation of Loss in case of Transboundary Harm Arising out of Hazardous Activities, UN Doc. A/CN.4/566 (March 2006)).

    Professor Rolland recently published a book focusing on the impact of the World Trade Organization’s law and institutions on developing countries: Development at the WTO, Oxford University Press, 2012. Her research interests include public international law, international trade law, environmental law and energy regulation. She teaches International Law, International Trade Law and Transnational Litigation.

    • Aaron Carty- Research Consultant
    • Aaron holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a law degree from Northeastern University. He also holds a Master’s of Environmental Law and Policy from Vermont Law School. He has substantial experience working in state and local government, including authoring draft legislation to create a tax incentive program to encourage homeowners to install energy efficient retrofits in their homes. Aaron has worked extensively in the areas of land-use and sustainable development for the Conservation Law Foundation and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
