When: The Student Alumni Association will begin collecting bears and monetary donations in November & December.
During the holiday season, the SAA gathers teddy bear donations from students, staff, and alumni from around the world. The bears are given to local hospitals, homeless shelters and any local children in need of a "Husky Hug" during the holiday season.
Committee Chair - Hailey Koop, VP of Community Service
Committee Structure - Consists of several members who help count, organize, and distribute all of the teddy bears at the end of the drive.
This past year the NU SAA collected 710 bears in total! They were donated to 10 local Boston children's organizations and hospitals. These included several Boys and Girls Clubs (Yawkey Roxbury, South Boston, Franklin Hill, Mattapan, and Dearborn Roxbury), Boston Medical Center, Home for Little Wanderers, Casa Myrna Vazquez, Italian Home for Children, and Harrington House.
The Student Alumni Association was able to collect over 600 bears! Charities that received bears in the Boston area included Casa Myrna Vazquez, the Italian Home for Children, the Home for Lil Wanderers, Boston Medical Center - Pediatrics and Toys for Tots. With the help of our regional alumni chapters, we were also able to provide bears to children across the country through charities in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Fairfield, Connecticut.
This drive additionally benefitted charities in the Stony Brook neighborhood of Boston. In the spring of 2008, Northeastern introduced the Stony Brook Initiative, which is a program that focuses on partnering with the Boston area on issues including urban engagement and growth. The Student Alumni Association collected 1140 teddy bears during the 2008 holiday season! Bears were donated and distributed to two additional organizations this year including Toys for Tots and the Italian Home for Children. Due to the large success of the program during the past holiday season, the event was deemed "Community Service Program of the Month" by the National Residence Hall Honorary.
