Athletic Secondary Insurance

Northeastern University takes pride in our student athletes. The Office of Risk Management offers a secondary insurance program to fully protect our student athletes in cases of sport related injuries. Our secondary insurance program will cover any medical expenses that the athlete’s primary insurance will not cover.

The following is needed to efficiently expedite a bill payment:

Claim Form: an Athletic Incident insurance claim form must be completed by both the athlete and the ATC. This form should be completed at the time of the injury or when referred off campus.

Itemized Bills: An itemized bill lists the injury codes, the patient's name, provider's name, address, tax identification number, diagnosis, dates of service, description of service, and amounts charged. The itemized bill can be in the form of a HCFA or UB92.
***Cash receipts, balance due, balance forward, or past due statements are NOT itemized bills and are therefore unacceptable.***

Explanation of Benefits: Also referred to as an EOB. The EOB tells you what portion of the claim was paid for by your primary insurance company and what balance (if any) is left over. If a balance remains, benefits under our secondary insurance policy will come into play.

Please Note: Northeastern's secondary insurance administrator, Gallagher Koster, will not pay any medical bills without first receiving the completed claim form, itemized bill and EOB.

To ensure faster processing, student athletes are asked to give their provider our secondary insurance information PRIOR to every medical service:

It is imperative that students inform their medical provider that this is an excess insurance policy for injuries incurred while participating in a Northeastern University varsity sport. All other valid and collectible medical insurance policies must be utilized prior to the consideration of this policy.
