Mission Statement and Responsibilities

Risk Services is connected to almost every area of the University and offers a variety of outreach programs. Our mission is to help protect the human resources, physical assets, financial solvency and reputation of Northeastern University so that the University may pursue its core mission of educational advancement.

The Risk Services Department at Northeastern University has developed long term objectives in pursuance of implementing our core mission. Most importantly, this includes developing the Department into a valuable resource for all campus constituencies and to furthermore help those constituencies pursue their own missions with risk management in mind.

We aim to construct a culture that involves basic risk management thought processes into every day operations while limiting exposures to liability, property and further losses. After all, we strive to allocate the University's resources efficiently by reducing the cost of risk.

The office of Risk Services will continually adhere to our responsibilities which incorporate administering the University's Property, Liability and other insurance policies. We will investigate and handle self-insured claims in an expeditious manner, and in doing so, we will support the filing and processing of insured claims with insurance carriers while coordinating with third-party administrators of claims programs as applicable.

We will perform risk assessments and analysis in cooperation with other departments or programs in an effort to establish levels of self-insurance and administer all self insurance programs.

We are additionally responsible to review contracts and agreements to ensure that the University bears only its proportionate share of any liability or claims that may arise from the agreement, and to ensure that appropriate insurance and other protective clauses are in the agreement.

Risk Services will furthermore collaborate with University administrators to develop policies and procedures to prevent or minimize losses. We will provide training, written procedures and guidelines to individual departments within the scope of the risk management and insurance programs.
