Mechatronics in Emerging Engineering Fields

Abstract

A low-cost mechatronics curriculum that has been incorporated in System Analysis and Control (ME4555) course in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is presented. With the support of the MathWorks, the curriculum aims to teach students the design and implementation of real-time controllers using MatLab/Simulink in team-based projects. The projects are based on both traditional and emerging engineering problems, and take advantage of easy-to-use and affordable Arduino microcontrollers. The curriculum can be easily implemented and/or adapted within any controls course at undergraduate and graduate levels. Student evaluations and impacts of the curriculum on our Capstone Senior Design course are presented, and modifications for future implementations are recommended.
