In this work we explore design aspects of adaptive power control based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, and study its performance in real?time at?sea experiments. Our design criterion is to maintain a target SNR at the receiver by adjusting the transmit power at the transmitter. We exploit an RF feedback link to communicate the SNR at the receiver, back to the transmitter. The effectiveness of the power control algorithm is demonstrated using an in?air acoustic test bed and is further confirmed using real?time at sea experiments conducted off the coast of Kauai, HI in June 2011.
