Registering your device on ResNet and NURes-device
If you have never registered your device before:

There are two options when it comes to registering your device for wired or wireless connection.

  1. Bring your device, power cable and any controllers or remotes down to ResNet. We will then register you for either wired, wireless, or both. Estimated Time: 20 min.
  2. Email the following information to ResNet@neu.edu from your Husky email:
    • A clear photograph or screenshot of your device’s MAC address (ex: 01:23:45:67:89:AB)
    • The MAC Address written into the email
    • Your name
    • HuskyMail address
    • Building/Room/Phone #
    • Type of Device to Be Registered
    • Whether you want the device to be registered for wireless, wired, or both. NOTE: If you want your device on the wired and wireless networks, we will need both the wired and wireless MAC address (which are different).

If you have registered for the wired network in a previous semester:

If you have registered in a previous semester, and this is the same device as one previously registered, you can just go to the registration student portal at http://registerresnet.neu.edu and hit “register” next to the entry for your console.

What Works on the Wireless and What Doesn’t:

Any device that can work on NUwave (any phone or computer) will NOT work on NURes-device. NURes-device is less secure than NUwave, so any device that can work on NUwave must go on NUwave instead.

For security reasons, device-to-device communication is blocked on NURes-device. This means that any device that needs to talk to another device over WiFi to work will not function on NURes-device. An example of this is a Chromecast. To watch Netflix on a Chromecast, you need to go onto a computer or phone that is on the same wireless network as the Chromecast and tell the device to play a specific episode on Netflix. This does not work. A Fire TV or Roku TV, on the other hand, is told to play Netflix by the remote control, which does not use WiFi and so Fire TVs and Roku TVs work on our network.

Devices that do NOT work on NURes-device:

  • Chromecasts (We recommend Fire TV or Roku TV sticks instead)
  • Wireless Speakers (Instead, we recommend Bluetooth speakers)
  • Network Printers (We recommend using the FREE virtual print system or a printer with a USB connection)
  • Most Smart Home Devices
  • App Remotes for Vizio TVs
  • Phones or Computers (which should be on NUwave)

Finding the MAC Address of your Device

Mac addresses will always be twelve characters consisting only of the letters A-F and the numbers 0-9, separated by “:” or “-” into six groups of two, e.g. 00:AA:BB:11:22:CC or 0A:1B:2C:3D:4E:5F. This is usually listed under the network settings menu of a device and called the “LAN Address”, “MAC Address”, “Hardware Address”, “WLAN”, “WiFi Address” or a similar name.

You can find the MAC address for the following devices:

Apple TV:
Go to main menu and select Settings.
Select About.
The MAC addresses will appear as either “Wireless ID” or “Ethernet ID”

Roku:
Look at the bottom or side of the device, it should be printed there.
If not, go to the home screen and select settings.
Select about. The Wireless and Wired (Ethernet) addresses should appear.

Amazon Fire TV stick:
Select Settings.
Select System.
Select About.
Select Network. The MAC addresses will appear here.

Vizio Smart TV:
Select Network under settings.
Select Manual Set Up. The wired and wireless MAC addresses will appear here.

Samsung Smart TV:
Select Network settings.
Choose Network status. The MAC address is the first option.

PlayStation 3:
Go to “Settings” on the Cross Media Bar (XMB) and select “System Settings.”
Scroll down and select “System Information.”
Your MAC Address will be the first item listed.
Once you have this MAC address, you may proceed to register your PS3.

PlayStation 4:
Turn on your PlayStation 4 without any disk in the drive and wait for the menu to pop up.
Navigate to the “Settings” icon (located on the far left).
Select the “System” icon under the Settings menu.
Select “System Information.”
You will see your MAC address (LAN cable and Wi-Fi) listed on this screen.
