Eligibility and Nomination Requirements

Northeastern may nominate two candidates for this award. If you are interested in being considered for nomination, please contact Karen Drew (x4824) immediately, and by no later than 12 July 2013, submit a CV and a 2-page pre-proposal following the format defined in the university’s Procedure for Programs with Limited Submissions.

The award is open to full-time faculty whose first independent appointment began between 7/1/11 and 12/1/13. Applications may focus on all fields of basic biomedical science. Investigators in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry and engineering) with biomedical research projects are also encouraged to apply.

 


Funding Areas

The Smith Family Awards Program for Excellence in Biomedical Research supports the careers of newly independent biomedical researchers with the ultimate goal of achieving medical breakthroughs. Applications may focus on all fields of basic biomedical science and may also be submitted by investigators in physics, chemistry and engineering.

Three year awards in the amount of $300,000 ($100,000 per year inclusive of 5% indirect costs) target new faculty who are within two years of their first independent appointment as of July 1st of the application year. Applicants must be full-time faculty at nonprofit academic, medical or research institutions in Massachusetts, at Brown University or at Yale University. Applicants must be nominated by their institutions.
