Eligibility and Nomination Requirements

Northeastern University may nominate two Northeastern faculty members for the upcoming Summer Stipend award from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Individuals who have held or been awarded a major fellowship or research grant or its equivalent within the three academic years prior to the deadline are ineligible [for an NEH summer stipend]. A “major fellowship or research grant” is a postdoctoral research award that provides a stipend of at least $15,000. Sabbaticals and grants from an individual’s own institution and stipends and grants from other sources supporting study and research during the summer are not considered major fellowships. If you have received any fellowships or research grants within the three years prior to the deadline, please indicate on your résumé the total amount of each award or grant.

Individuals who are interested in applying should, by July 9, submit the following materials as a single PDF document email attachment (not to exceed six pages), following the guidelines in the university’s Procedure for Programs with Limited Submissions.

  • Narrative: Not to exceed two single-spaced pages. This document should address each of the areas listed on the NEH Narrative Requirements, page 6: Research and contribution; methods and work-plan; competencies, skills, and access; final product and dissemination;
  • Resume: not to exceed two single-spaced pages;
  • Bibliography: one paragraph summary of primary and secondary sources;
  • The names of two individuals from whom you would request letters of recommendation, if nominated.
