RISE:2013 showcases the breadth and depth of innovative thinking at Northeastern, including topics in Physical & Life Sciences, Engineering, Humanities, Arts & Design, Computer & Information Sciences, Health Sciences, Law, Business and Social Sciences. In addition, our “Faculty Works” scholarly presentation honors faculty who published books or produced major artistic works in 2012.

The day wraps up with an Awards Ceremony and Reception. As in years past, awards will be given for Outstanding Student Research in each category, as based on the judges scores. Additionally, the RISE Awards (Research, Innovation, Scholarship and Entrepreneurship) will provide grants to students to further their research or endeavor.

This workshop is hosted by Senior Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education, Mel Bernstein. The Offices of Research Development, Research Administration and Finance, Research Compliance and the Center for Research Innovation will be giving short presentations on their respective roles in the research process at Northeastern with discussion time to follow. SUSTAINING COASTAL CITIES CONFERENCE

The College of Science at Northeastern University is hosting “Sustaining Coastal Cities,” a conference on the critical role and fragile state of marine ecosystems. It will be held on May 23, 2013 on its Boston campus.

Scheduled speakers:

Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, inaugural director of the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland, an institute dedicated to providing a vehicle for collaborative research, learning, engagement and advocacy in major global change issues.
Steve Gaines, dean of the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at University of California Santa Barbara; former director of the UCSB Marine Science Institute
Larry Crowder, science director at the Center for Ocean Solutions; professor of biology at Hopkins Marine Station and a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, both part of Stanford University

Creating an Educational Assessment Plan

The topic of discussion is creating an evaluation plan to assess student learning that aligns with your course objectives and activities. Dr. Susan Ambrose, Professor of Education and Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, will lead the discussion. Susan will bring a "model" of why do it, how do it, and some examples. She is an internationally recognized expert in college-level teaching and learning.

The topic of discussion is developing an educational plan that is congruent with a researcher’s goals of research and teaching and meets the criteria of funding agencies. A highly successful administrator from the Center for STEM Education will lead the discussion: Claire Duggan, Director of Programs and Partnerships. The Center for STEM Education helps shape the GK-20 STEM Education vision at Northeastern University and puts the university on the national map in this field. Their programs have a significant impact on the STEM pipeline, STEM teaching and learning in GK-20, GK-12 STEM outreach and on STEM education research.

NSF CAREER Award Workshop

This workshop will offer proposal writing tips and information specific to the NSF CAREER program. Horst Wittmann, Senior Research Development Officer in the Office of the provost and Sara Wadia-Fascetti, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Engineering, and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will lead the workshop. They will offer proposal writing tips, information specific to the NSF CAREER program, and there will be advice from a panel of recent CAREER award recipients.
