Under sponsorship from the BSI, Northeastern University Professor Richard Goettle will present key results from his forthcoming (co-authored) book, Double Dividend: Environmental Taxes and Fiscal Reform in the United States.

Abstract: Greenhouse gas emissions create hidden costs in the form of pollution and environmental damages. These costs are well-documented but are hidden in the sense that they occur outside the market, are not reflected in market prices, and are not taken into account by producers and consumers. Double Dividend presents a novel method for designing environmental taxes that correct market prices so that they reflect the true costs of production and use. The resulting revenue can be used to reduce the burden of the overall tax system, improve the performance of the economy and enhance individual and social welfare, creating the double dividend of the title.

Dr. Goettle is a Senior Lecturer in Finance and Economics on the Finance faculty of the D'Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University.
