Up to two Excellence in Research and Creative Activity Awards will be presented each year in honor of outstanding research and creative activity of national and international significance conducted by individual full-time faculty members at Northeastern University. The awards are given for excellent accomplishments in research or creative activities in the previous calendar year. Nominees will be evaluated primarily with respect to contributions during this period, although it is recognized that an outstanding achievement may be the complete time culmination of a career of several years of accomplishments.

One award may be presented in each of the following academic areas: Group 1: Arts, Media and Design; Humanities and Social Sciences; Business; and Law; and Group 2: Physical, Biological, Mathematical and Health Sciences; and Engineering.

ELIGIBILITY

Nominations of full-time faculty members must be for one individual only and not for a group or team. Nominations must have the endorsement of the nominee’s chair(s) (or equivalent) and dean(s); no college may send forward more than three nominees in any year. For the purposes of these limits on nominations, candidates with interdisciplinary appointments will be construed as nominated by the college of their locus of tenure. Nominations must include a cover letter briefly describing the candidate’s research/creative accomplishments for the period of review; the nominee’s curriculum vitae; and appropriate evidence of the quality and significance of the research/creative activity that forms the basis of the nomination (citations, grants, external awards, translational successes, reviews of creative works or books, as appropriate). Two letters of support are also required, preferably one from an external source. A major part of the work of which each nomination is based must have been completed while the nominee has served at Northeastern.

REVIEW AND SELECTION

A committee of faculty members selected by the Provost and Senior Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education from names provided by the deans will review the nominations. The committee may solicit additional input. It will prepare a short report for the Senior Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education to present to the President, the Provost on its findings and recommendations. Both the committee’s report and its deliberations will remain confidential. The President and the Provost will determine the final award winners, if any, in both award categories. Their decision is final and not appealable.

The recipients will be honored along with other academic awardees at an awards ceremony on April 18th hosted by the President and the Provost. The recipient must be present to receive the award.
