Benefit Change to the Post-9/11 GI-Bill
Effective August 1, 2011
For veterans and their transferees—creates a national maximum for those enrolled in a private school
- Private school costs are capped at $17,500 annually
- The Yellow Ribbon Program still exists for costs above the cap
Procedural Overview
- For students on active duty after 9/11/2001.
- Student should contact the VA representative in NU Veteran Enrollment Certification (see contact information at bottom of this page), who will certify enrollment.
- Student Financial Services does not certify this benefit.
- VA determines eligibility based on number of months student was on active duty after 9/11/2011.
- 36 months active duty is required for 100% eligibility
- Student must apply for this benefit directly with the VA.
- Students who were on active duty prior to 9/11/2001 as well can either exhaust their Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB, Chapter 30) benefit or forfeit their eligibility for Chapter 30 entirely. Once a student opts to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) benefits, they can no longer go back to Chapter 30.
- The tuition benefit is mailed directly to Northeastern.
- The living allowance (monthly benefit), along with a book stipend, is mailed directly to the student.
- The veteran has the option of transferring all of his/her benefit to a dependent (child/spouse).
