General Instructions
You must use the approved codes for programs, majors, minors, concentrations,
classes, and levels. Go to the Banner System Reference
Information page to find all Banner reference files. Forms with legacy
numeric major codes will be returned to the department for correction.
The top of the worksheet contains the key information of the section
and all information on each worksheet pertains to this specific section.
Please note:
- To add multiple
sections of an
existing section: You may photocopy the original page, make
the necessary changes, and submit the photocopy with your original rollover
worksheet.
- To add
a new class: Please print out the New
Class Add Form and submit it with the originals.
- To make changes after your worksheets have been submitted:
Please use the Class Change Form.
Key Information
Key information includes:
- Course Reference Number (CRN—previously called the key number)
- Course number and section number
- Status (Active or Inactive)
- Title
- Credit
- Campus
- Max allowed
- Meeting day/time
- Instructor information
In the upper left corner, we have provided the department name and the
legacy course number(s) equivalent to the new number.
In the upper right corner, there are two check-off boxes—one to
CANCEL the section and one to set the HONORS attribute for the section.
The empty boxes below the printed data are the areas for you to make
your changes. Please write clearly and make
your changes in red.
Detail Instructions
Please return ALL forms, including those
for sections you have cancelled.
- Cancelled
Section: If this section is to be cancelled, check the Cancel
box and return the form. There is no need to make further changes.
- Honors Section: If this is
an honors section, check the Honors box and complete the form. We will
place (HON) at the end of the course title and this will also print
on student transcripts.
- Status: If this class has
been rolled from the previous year and was made inactive at the time
courses were moved into Banner, it will need to be changed to Active
before it can be added to the schedule. If you wish to reactivate a
course please note that in the General Comments section at the bottom
of the form.
- Title Change: If you wish
to display the title of a topics section please enter the pertinent
information in the title box. This change will be made in the schedule
and will also print on the student transcript.
- Credits: If a course has variable
credit and you wish to offer it for a specific number of credits, please
indicate that number here. Students may specify the number of credits
they wish to take when registering for variable credit courses if the
number is left unspecified.
- Day/Time: Please make your
changes to the day/time meeting pattern here. It will be helpful
for us if you remember that Banner uses military time.
- Instructor: Please make instructor changes here.
Banner supports multiple instructors but one must be identified as the
primary instructor. Remember, we need the NUID to make all instructor
changes.
Registration Restrictions
IMPORTANT: The remaining questions pertain to registration
restrictions on the section. A few hints from the fall rollover experience:
- Use Signature Approval sparingly
as it slows down registration.
- Think twice, or three times, before setting up Reserved
Seating in any of your classes. We have found that this is
not an effective way to manage access to the section, and most times
it prevented all students from registering. If you do intend to use
this feature, we will review it with you upon receipt of the worksheets.
- Signature Required: If there
is a signature restriction on the course at the catalog level it is
carried forward onto the class schedule and it appears in the box. This
can be an advisor’s signature or an instructor’s signature.
If you use this restriction, each student will need to find the appropriate
person to receive an override before he/she can register. The necessary
restriction may already be in place in the course prerequisites. Please
review them before adding the signature restriction.
- College Restriction: If there
is a college restriction on the course at the catalog level it is carried
forward onto the class schedule and it appears in the box. Make the
appropriate change if necessary.
- Major Restriction: If there
a major restriction on the course at the catalog level it is carried
forward onto the class schedule and it appears in the box. Make the
appropriate change if necessary. Remember: You must use the new
major codes (which can be seen at the Banner
System Reference Information page).
- Class Restriction: If there
a class restriction on the course at the catalog level it is carried
forward onto the class schedule and it appears in the box. The only
approved data that can be used here are: FR (freshman), SH (sophomore),
JR (junior), SR (senior) or GR (graduate).
- Level Restriction: If there
a level restriction on the course at the catalog level it is carried
forward onto the class schedule and it appears in the box. The only
approved data that can be entered here are UG (undergraduate) or GR
(graduate). If a course is in the 5000 number range and is listed for
both UG and GR students but you wish to only offer the section to graduate
students at this time, please indicate that information to us.
- Required Corequisite(s): This
information is carried forward from the catalog.
- Section Attributes: Attributes
are carried forward from catalog and include NU Core, the CAS Core,
Honors, and billing information.
- Reserved Seating: Our experience
from the fall was that this really only works well if the class is open
to both graduate and undergraduate students and you wish to hold aside
a specific number of seats for each level. Other attempts to restrict
registration based on seating did nothing but restrict all students
from registering.
- General Comments: This is where you can provide additional
data such as: special dates, specific rooms (departmental space), special
rooming instructions, or other information you believe is pertinent
to support either student registration or rooming.
