GEORGE R. ATKINSON, EDD, Director of the School and Associate Dean of University College

Sally Solomon, BA, Assistant Director
Jeffrey B. Hannibal, MEd, Coordinator for Academic Support Services

The School of General Studies (SGS) is designed for students who need help strengthening their basic skills while they take the required freshman-year course work in English, mathematics, and social and laboratory sciences.

Through the combination of a prescribed curriculum, small classes, low student-teacher ratio, and expert faculty, students follow a program that fits their academic and career goals. SGS faculty provide advice and participate in a “House Plan” in which they share information on each student’s progress.

The school helps SGS students excel at college work and prepare for academic success as upperclass Northeastern University students. SGS students transition as sophomores into their destination Northeastern college following successful completion of the SGS year. All SGS courses count toward graduation.

In preparation for gaining sophomore status, SGS students follow one of four curriculum tracks: arts and sciences or undecided, business, criminal justice, and health/science.

As with all full-time Northeastern students, SGS students have access to all physical education facilities and cocurricular programs, as well as to the nationally certified SGS Peer Tutoring Program, the Academic Assistance Center, the math and writing centers, and all available personal and academic support networks at the University.

Class Entrance Requirements

To qualify for sophomore status in their destination Northeastern college, SGS students must earn the required grade-point average and successfully complete a minimum of 33 semester hours of credit, as well as required courses.
