MSC 1200 Business Statistics 1 4 QH

Studies statistics, which is the methodology concerned with data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Discusses the information that is generated by statistical methods and used for analyzing decisions in the face of uncertainty. Introduces fundamental concepts and methodology of statistics, probability distribution, estimation, and hypothesis testing. Prereq. MTH1114.

MSC 1201 Business Statistics 2 4 QH

Continues topics covered in MSC1200. Includes chi-square tests, simple and multiple regression-correlation analysis, and elementary concepts of time-series analysis. Prereq. MSC1200.

MSC 1301 Management Information Systems 4 QH

Addresses the role of information and computer-based information systems in managing business organizations. Topics include hardware and software concepts; strategic use of information technology; applications such as databases, decision support systems, and collaboration systems; telecommunications; e-commerce; knowledge management and information-based business processes; ethics, informational privacy and security; the design and development of information systems; and management of the IS function. Focuses on information systems in business from a managerial perspective, rather than teaching specific software skills.

MSC 1330 Data Management 4 QH

Exposes students to the essentials of database design and management. Topics include entity-relationship models, data normalization, SQL, forms design, database administration, security, and privacy. Covers systems analysis and design methodologies including information requirements analysis. Requires students to develop a comprehensive database in a course project.

MSC 1332 Decision Support Systems for Business 4 QH

Provides students with an understanding of the impact of computer-based tools on business decision-making. Gives students an opportunity to analyze and model the information requirements to support various decisions and decision-making processes. Covers decision-support software such as spreadsheets, expert systems, and Web-based tools. Gives students the opportunity to build a decision-support system and create the supporting system documentation in course projects. Prereq. MSC1330.

MSC 1335 Telecommunications and Networks 4 QH

Reviews business telecommunications. Focuses on the design, use, and management of networks. Topics include telecommunications technology, network structures, and current telecommunication applications in business such as electronic mail, teleconferencing, and distributed applications.

MSC 1336 Business Programming 4 QH

Provides students with experience in structured reasoning and programming. Gives students an opportunity to gain an appreciation for design, coding, debugging, and executing program modules. Emphasizes the design methodologies required to create such modules. Prereq. MSC1330.

MSC 1341 Information Resource Management 4 QH

Examines the major organizational and managerial issues associated with managing the information resource, focusing on three thematic components. Gives students an opportunity to assume a strategic viewpoint and consider using information to achieve competitive advantage, create new products or services, or to re-engineer the business; learn about using information technology to support the functional areas of the business such as finance, manufacturing, or human resources; consider issues related to managing information technology such as outsourcing IS applications, project management, and investing in new technology.

MSC 1342 Business Systems Integration 4 QH

Explores strategies for the technical and organizational integration of information systems through a project requiring students to form companies, analyze their data needs, design and build a set of information systems, and recommend a strategy for data architecture integration. This is the capstone course for the MIS concentration. Prereq. MSC1332, MSC1341, and senior standing. MSC1336 recommended.

MSC 1441 Operations Management 4 QH

Considers the productive system of an enterprise whereby inputs of technology, materials, personnel, and information are transformed into useful goods and/or services. Introduces the types of problems and issues encountered by the operating managers. Discusses various models and techniques, with an emphasis on problem formulation and managerial implications.

MSC 1520 Mass Customization 4 QH

Mass customization refers to meeting individual customers' needs by using mass production methods. Focuses on important issues such as characterization and typology of mass customization systems, individualized product/service development, market analysis and one-to-one marketing, electronic commerce, virtual shopping, technology enablers, networking, virtual factories, enterprise architecture for mass customization, manufacturing/ service costing, and logistics. Requires student teams to work on term projects to study firms involved in mass customized production/service. Prereq. Senior standing.

MSC 1566 Quality Management 4 QH

Examines the basic philosophy of quality and its management both in Japan and in the United States. Stresses the changing role of quality as an emerging strategic factor in the United States. Discusses managerial, behavioral, and statistical methods based on measurement for achieving quality. Introduces the student to various aspects of quality management relevant to lower, middle, and upper level of management; quality control circles; quality and continuous process improvements; and the philosophy of quality experts such as Deming, Juran, and Ishikawa. Prereq. MSC1201 and MSC1441.

MSC 1575 E-commerce Systems Design 4 QH

Focuses on the design and management of technologies for electronic commerce systems. Covers server management principles for efficiency, performance, and security. Explores issues related to encryption, payment systems, domain registration, cookie files, and consumer information privacy. Examines client-side scripting for user interaction. Discusses Website design principles and techniques; interface design standards, including graphics and navigational design; along with Web-enabled database design principles, quality assurance, and other important building blocks. Involves lectures, discussions, readings, business cases, and visiting experts. Individual and group programming exercises and projects are required. Prereq. COM1101, or equivalent.

MSC 1591 Independent Study 1 QH

Allows the student who has received approval to undertake independent study in lieu of any course required in the various concentrations. Students present proposals to an Independent Studies Committee for evaluation and approval. Every proposal requires a detailed outline of the objectives and plan of study and must be accompanied by a supporting statement from the supervising faculty member under whose direction the study will take place. A copy of the final report prepared by the student is presented to the appropriate Independent Studies Committee. Further information about the Independent Studies Program can be obtained from concentration coordinators.

Focuses on analyzing data using statistical models from various functional areas of business. Students prepare reports based on actual data that involve forecasting. Prereq. MSC1201.
