School and College Transition Criteria

Majors in the College of Science

Note: The criteria below are in addition to the GPA and advisor-discussion criteria outlined on the changing-majors main page.

Behavioral Neuroscience

Students must complete two courses (with lab), as detailed below, with a grade of B or better:

MATH 1251 Calculus and Differential Equations for Biology 1 (4 SH)
BIOL 1101 Principles of Biology 1 (4 SH)
   with BIOL 1102 Lab for BIOL 1101 (1 SH)
or BIOL 1111 General Biology 1 (4 SH)
   with BIOL 1112 Lab for BIOL 1111 (1 SH)
or CHEM 1211 General Chemistry 1 (4 SH)
   with CHEM 1212 Lab for CHEM 1211 (1 SH)

 


Biochemistry

Students must complete the following course with lab (or its equivalent) with a grade of B or better:

CHEM 1211 General Chemistry 1 (4 SH)
   with CHEM 1212 Lab for CHEM 1211 (1 SH)

Students must also complete the following course with a grade of C or better:

MATH 1341 Calculus 1 for Science and Engineering (4 SH)

 


Biology

Students must complete one semester of calculus or the following course:

MATH 1120 Precalculus (4 SH)

with a grade of C or better for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Biology
  • Biology and geology
  • Biology and mathematics
  • Computer science and biology

Chemistry

Students must complete the following courses:

CHEM 1211 General Chemistry 1 (4 SH)
   with CHEM 1212 Lab for CHEM 1211 (1 SH)
MATH 1341 Calculus 1 for Science and Engineering (4 SH)

or the equivalent of these courses, with a grade of B or better in both courses for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Chemistry
  • Environmental geology and chemistry
  • Geology and chemistry

Students must have a GPA of 2.500 for all chemistry, physics, and math courses taken.


Environmental Science

Students must complete the follwoing course:

ENVR 1101 Environmental Science (4 SH)

with a grade of B or better for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Environmental science
  • Biology and geology
  • Computer science and environmental science
  • Environmental geology and chemistry
  • Environmental geology and environmental studies
  • Environmental geology and mathematics
  • Environmental geology and physics
  • Geology and chemistry
  • Geology and mathematics
  • Geology and physics
  • Information science and environmental science

Environmental Studies

Students must complete the follwoing course:

ENVR 1101 Environmental Science (4 SH)

with a grade of B or better for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Environmental studies
  • Environmental geology and environmental studies
  • Environmental studies and economics
  • Environmental studies and history
  • Environmental studies and international affairs
  • Environmental studies and philosophy
  • Environmental studies and political science

Linguistics

Students must complete the following course:

LING 1150 Introduction to Language and Linguistics (4 SH)

with a grade of B or better for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Linguistics
  • Linguistics and English
  • Linguistics and psychology

Marine Biology

Students must complete the following with a grade of B or better:

BIOL 1101 Principles of Biology 1 (4 SH)
   with BIOL 1102 Lab for BIOL 1101 (1 SH)
or BIOL 1111 General Biology 1 (4 SH)
   with BIOL 1112 Lab for BIOL 1111 (1 SH)

 


Mathematics

Students must complete the following course:

MATH 1341 Calculus 1 for Science and Engineering (4 SH)

with a grade of B or better for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Mathematics
  • Biology and mathematics
  • Cinema studies and mathematics
  • Computer science and mathematics
  • Economics and mathematics
  • Environmental geology and mathematics
  • Geology and mathematics
  • Mathematics and business administration
  • Mathematics and physics

Physics

Students must complete the following:

PHYS 1151 Physics for Engineering 1 (3 SH)
   with PHYS 1152 Lab for PHYS 1151 (1 SH)
   with PHYS 1153 Interactive Learning Seminar for PHYS 1151 (1 SH)
or PHYS 1161 Physics 1 (4 SH)
   with PHYS 1162 Lab for PHYS 1161 (1 SH)
   with PHYS 1163 Recitation for PHYS 1161 (0 SH)

with a grade of B or better for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Physics
  • Applied physics
  • Biomedical physics
  • Chemical engineering and physics
  • Computer engineering and physics
  • Computer science and physics
  • Electrical engineering and physics
  • Environmental geology and physics
  • Geology and physics
  • Mathematics and physics
  • Mechanical engineering and physics
  • Physics and philosophy

Psychology

Students must either (a) have a cumulative GPA of 2.500 or higher or (b) have a GPA of 2.500 or higher in all of their Northeastern psychology courses (with a minimum of three) to change to the psychology major.

To change to the combined major in psychology and education students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.750 or higher and meet the requirements specified at the program website.
