Changing Majors
School and College Transition Criteria

Majors in the College of Arts, Media and Design

Note: The criteria below are in addition to the GPA and advisor-discussion criteria outlined on the changing-majors main page.

Architecture

Any student with an overall GPA of 2.500 or higher may transfer into architecture or landscape architecture, waiving the requirement for specific courses.

Students with GPA of 2.000–2.499 must complete the following four courses with the specified minimum grades:

ARCH 1110 Fundamental Architectural Representation (6 SH)
   with a grade of B or better
ARCH 1310 Architecture and Global Cultures, Prehistory to 1400 (4 SH)
   with a grade of B or better
MATH 1241 Calculus 1 (4 SH)
   with a passing grade
PHYS 1141 General Physics (4 SH)
   (for architecture majors) with a passing grade
or ENVR 1200 Dynamic Earth (4 SH)
   (for landscape architecture majors) with a passing grade

 


Art + Design

Any student with an overall GPA of 2.667 (B– average) or higher may transfer into the Art + Design majors, waiving the requirement for specific courses.

Students with GPA of 2.000–2.666 must complete the following courses with a grade of C+ or better:

          • Graphic Design

   with ARTF 1123 2D Tools: Imaging Basics (1 SH)
or ARTF 1124 3D Foundation (4 SH)
   with ARTF 1125 3D Tools: Form Basics (1 SH)
ARTH 1110 Global Art + Design History: Ancient to Medieval (4 SH)
or ARTH 1111 Global Art + Design History: Renaissance to Modern (4 SH)

Combined Major in Cinema Studies and Digital Art

ARTF 1122 2D Foundation (4 SH)
   with ARTF 1123 2D Tools: Imaging Basics (1 SH)
or ARTF 2220 4D Foundation (4 SH)
   with ARTF 2221 4D Tools: Motion Basics (1 SH)
ARTH 1111 Global Art + Design History: Renaissance to Modern (4 SH)
or ARTH 2212 Survey of the Still and Moving Image (4 SH)

Combined Majors in:
          • Digital Art and Game Design
          • Digital Art and Interactive Media
          • Graphic Design and Interactive Media

ARTF 1122 2D Foundation (4 SH)
   with ARTF 1123 2D Tools: Imaging Basics (1 SH)
or ARTF 1124 3D Foundation (4 SH)

Combined Major in Graphic Design and Game Design

ARTH 1111 Global Art + Design History: Renaissance to Modern (4 SH)

Combined Major in Interactive Media and Music
with Concentration in Music Composition and Technology

ARTF 1122 2D Foundation (4 SH)
   with ARTF 1123 2D Tools: Imaging Basics (1 SH)
or ARTF 2223 Interactive Foundation (4 SH)
   with ARTF 2224 Interactive Tools (1 SH)

Studio Art

Portfolio review by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.


Communication Studies

Any student with a 2.667 or better overall GPA or a 2.667 or better GPA in three or more communication classes may transfer into the communication studies major.

The department will consider written appeals from students close (2.600 or better) to the GPA cutoff on a case-by-case basis.

Students with an overall GPA between 2.000 and 2.666 must complete two of the following three courses with an average GPA of 2.667 or better:

COMM 1101 Introduction to Communication Studies (4 SH)
COMM 1112 Public Speaking (4 SH)
COMM 2301 Methods and Research in Communication (4 SH)

 


Game Design

Please see guidelines under Art + Design for the following combined majors:

  • Graphic design and game design

Journalism

No major-specific requirements for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Journalism
  • Cinema studies and journalism
  • Media and screen studies and journalism

Music

Requirements for transfer into the music majors are listed below.

Music with Concentration in Music Composition and Technology

Students must submit a portfolio of recent original work and complete an interview.

Music with Concentration in Music History and Analysis

No major-specific requirements.

Music with Concentration in Music Industry

Any student with an overall GPA of 2.667 (B– average) or better  may transfer into this major, waiving the requirement for specific courses. 

Students with GPA of 2.000–2.666 must complete the following course with a grade of C or better:

MUSI 1230 Introduction to Music Industry (4 SH)

Combined Major in Computer Science and Music
with Concentration in Music Composition and Technology

Students must submit a portfolio of recent original work and complete an interview in addition to meeting the requirements outlined for majors in Computer and Information Science.

Combined Major in Interactive Media and Music with Concentration in Music Composition and Technology

Students must submit a portfolio of recent original work and complete an interview


Theatre

No major-specific requirements for the following major and combined major programs:

  • Theatre
  • American Sign Language and theatre
  • Cinema studies and theatre
  • Media and screen studies and theatre
